Waiting on Wednesday (190)

This is a meme hosted by Breaking the Spine where every Wednesday bloggers highlight a book that they are eagerly anticipating the release of!

Temporary
By Sarina Bowen and Sarah Mayberry
Release Date: September 12, 2017
The most beautiful man I've ever seen is the one who can ruin everything...

The first time I lay eyes on Callan Walker, I know he’ll be trouble. With his smug grin, hot Aussie accent and thousand dollar shoes, he’s just the kind of rich guy who always gets what he wants.

And he wants two things: a night of sin, and my cooperation as he outmaneuvers his powerful mother to take control of his uncle’s estate.

I can’t afford either one. I’m the only thing standing between my little sister and the foster care system. He may have money and charm on his side, but I have something even more powerful -- pure desperation. This temp job at his mother’s company can become a full time job for me. It has to.

But when Callan’s eyes rake over my body, sometimes I forget my obligations. His piercing gaze finds the fun, optimistic girl I used to be and not the tired person I’ve become.

And it works--if only for a moment. Our night together was a mistake. I can't afford to get sucked into his high-powered family’s treachery. But the closer I get to Callan, the more layers I find beneath those expensive clothes. Though I can’t forget this is temporary. He’s temporary. I have too much to lose.

Too bad my foolish heart didn’t get the memo

---------------------------------

Let's be honestthe only reason that this book caught my eye is because Sarina Bowen is one of the authors. I love Sarina's writing, so of course this book is on my radar. I've actually never heard of Sarah Mayberry before, so I'm excited to see how her writing works with Sarina's. And the love interest is Australian?? Sign me up! And I love how the main character tries everything to resist the hot Aussie. I can't wait to read this one!

Present day…
I took in the mess of the large, circular room we were in and at first saw nothing but the mess—decaying furniture, a soot-covered stone fireplace, a kitchen that might have been put in in the forties but had not only not been touched the last nine years, it perhaps had not been touched the last nineteen (or more).
Then I saw more.
The extraordinarily carved railing to the sweeping wood staircase that ran the curved side of the house. The red brick walls. The plank wood floors.
“Once upon a time, long ago,” the realtor was suddenly talking wistfully, “someone loved this place. Put that love into building it. Put that love into keeping it. Nine years and more when no one really gave a whit, and still you can see it once had a lot of love.”
Oh yes.
You could see that.
“It’s got a basement, more like a big crawl space,” the agent declared, surprising me with his quick change in tone back to businesslike and informative. “The furnace is down there. You can get down there through a door in the floor. The furnace was put in a while back, and full disclosure, though an inspection will catch it, it probably needs to be replaced.”
Through his words I stared at the fireplace, which scoured would be magnificent, and I noticed it didn’t have a chimney as such, but the smoke probably went out a vent in the wall.
“This floor has a powder room under the stairs,” the realtor kept on. “You can look at it if you want, but if you wanna save yourself that, I’ll just tell you straight, it needs to be gutted.”
I decided to take his word for it and told him that.
He looked relieved when I did before he stated, “Place has a garage, two car. Not in good condition, but think you saw that. Still, it’s close to the house and there’s a covered walkway to that door over there.” He pointed at a door that was across from the door we’d walked in. “Means you might feel a chill but you won’t get wet, unless it’s raining sideways, which happens.”
With a breeze that plastered my jacket to me on a sunny, early spring day, I did not doubt that.
“Garage has a loft space above it, which could be renovated as a studio rental if you’ve a mind to do that sort of thing. As for the property itself, it also has a building where the generators are stowed,” the realtor carried on. “Hook up for a washer and dryer and good space in there. Lots of it for storage. Which is good because there’s not a lot of storage in here for tools and Christmas decorations and whatnot.”
I glanced around seeing he was right. There wasn’t even enough cabinetry to house the things a decent cook would need in her kitchen. Though there was room for them. In fact, if you fought back the gloom, there was quite a bit of room.
“And there’s a place outside, could call it a studio, could call it a mother-in-law house,” he shared. “Whatever, it’s got goodly space, two bedrooms, big kitchen. Could be renovated to be a guest house. Or like I said, a studio if you’re artsy. Or you could rent it out like a B and B. I’ll show you all of that after we have a look at the lighthouse.”
“Thanks,” I replied.
“Now, since I mentioned full disclosure, you have to know it all,” the realtor continued.
Slowly, my eyes went to him.
When they did, he launched in. “Like I said, it’s automated. And like I said, you won’t really have to concern yourself with the functionality of that unless the electricity goes out, but then the generators automatically kick in. There are two. But you’ll need to keep fuel on hand to keep them going in case a blackout lasts awhile. And just to say, this is coastal Maine. We get weather. Blackouts can last awhile.”
When I nodded to share I took that in, he kept going.
“And if you’re, say, away on vacation, you need to make sure someone is playing backup in such a case.”
“Okay,” I replied when he stopped talking, thinking this probably wasn’t a good thing since I knew no one in Maine (or not anyone who wanted to know me) and thus couldn’t call on anyone to do something like that.
I also didn’t hold high hopes I’d make friends and win people. I hadn’t had a lot of success in that in my life.
And last, although Patrick believed it completely, I held no hope that the reason I was out there was going to come to fruition.
That being me having a happy ending.
That being what Patrick thought would be my happy ending.
Which might mean I’d have someone, a certain someone, or actually two (at least), even though I knew I never would.

About the Author

Kristen Ashley was born in Gary, Indiana, USA and nearly killed her mother and herself making it into the world, seeing as she had the umbilical cord wrapped around her neck (already attempting to accessorize and she hadn't taken her first breath!). Her mother said they took Kristen away, put her Mom back in her room, her mother looked out the window, and Gary was on fire (Dr. King had been assassinated four days before). Kristen's Mom remembered thinking it was the end of the world. Quite the dramatic beginning. Nothing's changed. Kristen grew up in Brownsburg, Indiana and has lived in Denver, Colorado and the West Country of England. Thus, she's blessed to have friends and family around the globe. Her family was (is) loopy (to say the least) but loopy is good when you want to write. They all lived together on a very small farm in a small farm town in the heartland. She grew up with Glenn Miller, The Everly Brothers, REO Speedwagon and Whitesnake (and the wardrobes that matched). Needless to say, growing up in a house full of music, clothes and love was a good way to grow up. And as she keeps growing, it keeps getting better.

Book Review: Fallen Heir by Erin Watt

Fallen Heir (The Royals #4)
By Erin Watt
Release Date: August 28, 2017
Source: Authors
These Royals will ruin you.

Easton Royal has it all: looks, money, intelligence. His goal in life is to have as much fun as possible. He never thinks about the consequences because he doesn’t have to.

Until Hartley Wright appears, shaking up his easy life. She’s the one girl who’s said no, despite being attracted to him. Easton can’t figure her out and that makes her all the more irresistible.

Hartley doesn’t want him. She says he needs to grow up.

She might be right.

Rivals. Rules. Regrets. For the first time in Easton’s life, wearing a Royal crown isn’t enough. He’s about to learn that the higher you start, the harder you fall.

Let me start off by saying that this book is probably my most anticipated read of the year. When I heard that ARCs were being sent out, I refreshed my Kindle every 20 minutes and flipped out when that beautiful purple cover popped up in my Kindle library. I want to thank Elle, Jen, and Nina for sending me an e-arc and making my year! I couldn't wait to finally have my love Easton's story and I devoured this book in one day.

Easton Royal knows he's treated like royalty and takes full advantage of his name. Money? Girls? Popularity? All his. And Easton never has to think of the consequences of his actions. Until Hartley Wright enters his life. Easton is bored with the way his senior year is going and needs an outlet for all of his pent-up energy. Hartley is so refreshing among the same-old at their privileged high school. The only catch? Hartley wants nothing to do with Easton and seems immune to his charms. Easton's not one to give up on a challenge, but he's not prepared for how much Hartley will challenge him in the way he lives his life and the way he feels about her.

Going into this, I was so freaking excited for Easton's story. He is just so broken and has so much crap to deal with emotionally ever since his mom died (which happened before this series even started). I hate how he self-medicates with fighting, sex, and alcohol. Hartley is exactly what Easton needed to put his life in perspective and I loved how much she challenged him. She was so fun and I loved having another strong female character in this series next to Ella. Of course, she was hiding something and was determined to get through life and high school without help from anyone, especially someone like Easton. There was so much resistance from her, but how can anyone resist someone like Easton!? I'm surprised she wasn't friends with Ella already!

Regarding the romance, I was a little sad we didn't get more of an intense romance in this, but a lot of the book was Easton trying to prove that he could genuinely be a good person to Hartley. There were moments where she let her guard down, but this definitely did not have the hot and heavy romance we got from Ella and Reed. With Easton's reputation, this surprised me, but because Hartley had a fierce, more focused and serious personality, the lack of heat made sense. Hartley isn't one to lose control and she very rarely did in this book.

Can we talk about that ending?!? Because that cliff-hanger killed me, as well as that secret that was thrown in there. I was kind of guessing the secret about halfway through the book, but it still killed me when it came to light. I gasped out loud when the ending happened and am SO MAD I have to wait until January to figure out what's going to happen next. So much drama, angst, and emotion! I love Easton more than ever and just want to fix all of his broken pieces. This was everything I wanted and more in the next Royals book and I already can't wait for more!

From Publisher

Some awesome books came for me this week and I am so excited! I have actually never read any of these authors before, but they all look amazing! I think I'm the most excited for In Pieces because I have heard amazing things about Danielle Pearl!

From Thriftbooks

I decided to build my collection of the floppy paperbacks of the Outlander series, so I ordered three more on top of the two I already had from Thriftbooks! I love them so much and can't wait to finally continue with this series!

That's it for me! What did you all add to your shelves this week?

Books in Bourbon Country Signing

When book signings come around, there is a lot of waiting around until the day actually comes. I had bought my tickets for Books in Bourbon Country MONTHS in advance and was waiting for that August weekend to finally come around. I was so excited to meet some of my favorite authors and they were only going to be three and a half hours away from me!

I left super early in the morning (we're talking 5:30 am), picked up a friend right across the border from Cincinnati, and arrived in Louisville early and ready to go. After waiting a couple of hours for the doors to open to the public, I spent four hours meeting my favorite authors, discovering new authors, and talking to some pretty amazing readers.

I am still in shock that I got to meet these four amazing ladies. Since the signing wasn't busy at all, I got to spend so much time talking to each and every one of them. They were all so friendly and genuinely loved talking to their readers. Cora was so fun to gush about her books to and I completely fangirled over Mariana. I bought books from all of these authors and had them sign all of the books I already owned by them. Since the signing lasted four hours and I only spent about an hour with these four ladies, I roamed the tables and found some other pretty amazing authors!

This was the first book signing I brought a rolling cart to, so I had nothing holding me back from buying as many books as I wanted to. Normally my bag fills up very quickly and I'm able to restrain myself from buying too much because my arm is killing me. While having a cart was a little dangerous for my wallet, I discovered three authors that I am so excited to read. Celia Aaron was so fun and convinced me to buy three of her books since I couldn't make up my mind. They sound like really gritty, dark romances, which is right up my alley. I also picked up a book by Fiona Cole and AJ Norris and can't wait to read them!

Overall, this was definitely one of the best book signings I have ever been to. They weren't crowded at all and I got to spend so much time with my favorite authors and discovering new authors. I cannot wait to go back to this signing next year!

Book Review: The One That Got Away by Melissa Pimentel

The One That Got Away
By Melissa Pimentel
Release Date: August 22, 2017
Source: Publisher
A smart, funny, and modern retelling of Jane Austen's Persuasion, where a young woman comes face-to-face with a lost love, proving that the one that got away is sometimes the one you get back.

Ruby and Ethan were perfect for each other. Until the day they suddenly weren't.

Ten years later, Ruby's single, having spent the last decade focusing on her demanding career and hectic life in Manhattan. There's barely time for a trip to England for her little sister's wedding. And there's certainly not time to think about seeing Ethan there for the first time in years.

But as the family frantically prepare for the big day, Ruby can't help but wonder if she made the right choice all those years ago? Because there's nothing like a wedding for stirring up the past.

Seeing as this was pitched as a modern-day Persuasion retelling, I couldn't wait to start it. I'm a sucker for any book inspired by Jane Austen, so I had some high expectations going into this one.

Ten years ago, Ruby and Ethan were madly in love. Now, not so much. Not having seen each other in years, Ruby and Ethan are thrown together for Ruby's sister's wedding in England. Ethan has definitely changed over the years and has gone from a bartender to a millionaire who has a lot going for him. Ruby tries to convince herself that she loves her life in New York, but spending time in England has her reevaluating her past and where she wants her future to go.

Like I said, I had some pretty big expectations going into this one. Sadly, from the start, I could care less about Ruby's character. There was something about her that just rubbed me the wrong way and I did not like how much she just hated her life. It had been TEN YEARS since she had moved to New York and she still wasn't content. Girl, take control of your life! She spent pretty much the whole book complaining and being super jealous of anyone who would talk to Ethan. I felt like the reason she broke it off with Ethan seemed like it was teated as not that big of a deal. The event that caused the break up sounded so wrong yet no one mentioned that or delved deeper into that event (Sorry to sound super vague, I just don't want to spoil anything).

Also, there were plot points that seemed to be done for the sake of the plot, which I am never a fan of. I want to say that almost five times either one of them was going to finally confront the other about the past, but someone or something conveniently interrupted them. It was fine the first time, but then just got redundant and annoying. I wasn't even in love with any of the side characters and the ending was super rushed with nothing really being talked about or fleshed out.

Overall, this was a huge miss for me. This took over a week for me to get through because I had no motivation to pick it up. I really didn't click with the main character and just got more annoyed with each passing page. While this had potential to be another great Jane Austen inspired novel, it just wasn't for me.

We Own the Night
By Corinne Michaels
Release Date: September 7, 2017
From New York Times Bestseller, Corinne Michaels, comes a sexy new STANDALONE romance novel.

I’m not a one-night stand kind of woman. I’m especially not the woman who has a few drinks at a concert and ends up in bed with my childhood celebrity crush, Eli Walsh.

However, that’s exactly where I find myself.

What’s a girl to do after a drunken mistake? Run. I grab my clothes and get away from the powerful, irresistible, and best-sex-of-my-life superstar as fast as I can. His gorgeous green eyes, rock-hard body, and cocky smile have no place in my world. My life is complicated enough.

Someone forgot to tell him that.

Eli is relentless. Pushing his way into my heart, wearing me down, proving he’s nothing like I assumed, and everything I need. But when my world shatters to pieces, he holds the broken bits together. Unwillingly, I fall desperately in love with him.

He made me think we’d have forever . . . I should’ve listened when he said we could only own tonight.

-----------------------------------

Ever since I read Say You'll Stay, I have been dying to read another book by Corinne Michaels. When I saw this cover, I became even more excited to read it. I mean, isn't it gorgeous?! AND IT'S A ROCKSTAR ROMANCE. I am a sucker for a good rockstar romance, so I am so excited that the main character of this book makes a "drunken mistake" with her childhood celebrity crush. And I love how he's pursuing her and not taking no for an answer. Did I mention that this also sounds like a super emotional read? I can't wait to read this!

And Don’t Miss the First Three Standalone Novels in the Fusion Series!

“There seems to be an explosion in the jackass population,” I reply, and sigh, passing my glass to Kat for a refill.
“Where are you meeting them?” he asks, and I bite my lip.
“I don’t want to tell you.”
“Online,” he says with a nod.
“I didn’t say that!”
“Didn’t have to. If you met him at the gym or the grocery store, or somewhere else in person, you wouldn’t be embarrassed.”
“I’m not embarrassed.”
“Yes, you are. Otherwise, you wouldn’t mind telling me.”
“Fine.” I sigh and rub my forehead with my fingers. “I met them online.”
“Stop that,” he says.
“I don’t know where else I’d meet people,” I reply. “I’m at work at least fifty hours a week. I don’t do school or clubs or church, and I rarely go to the grocery store because I always eat here.”
“I could stop feeding you,” Mia interjects and I toss her a glare.
“I’m just saying, if you always do what you’ve always done, you’ll always get what you’ve always gotten.”
“I don’t understand any of the words you just said.” I squint at him, trying to process.
“Switch it up,” he says with a grin. “Try to meet people somewhere else. I mean, you didn’t meet me online, and I’m not an asshole.”
“Sure, you’re cute, and you look like you have your shit together, but I suspect that once I got to know you I’d learn that you have mommy issues and fourteen dogs.”
“You might,” he says with a thoughtful nod. “I do hide those things well. All I’m saying is, stop using the dating sites and try meeting people in real life.”
“Yeah. Easy for you to say.” I pout into my wineglass. “Do I need to send you some money for this counseling session?”
“Nah, the first one’s on me,” he says, tossing that crazy-hot smile at me again. “Just don’t combine Star Warsand Star Trek anymore and that’s payment enough for me.”
He pulls a few bills out of his wallet and tosses them on the bar, then stands to leave.
“Have a good night, and good luck,” he says.
“Thanks.” Just as he’s almost out of view, I call out. “Wait! I didn’t ask your name.”
“Trevor,” he says, and my stomach immediately does at least four cartwheels. “Trevor Cooper.”
“You’re early,” is all I can think to say. My cheeks burning, my fingertips immediately tremble. “You’re not supposed to be here for two more days.”
“I like to come early. Get the lay of the land, that sort of thing.” He smiles and waves. “See you in a couple of days.”
He walks away, and as soon as I hear the front door close, I turn to my friends and just stare at them in utter horror.
“Tell me that didn’t just happen.”

About the Author

Kristen was born and raised in a small resort town in her beloved Montana. In her mid-twenties, she decided to stretch her wings and move to the Pacific Northwest, where she made her home for more than a dozen years.

During that time, Kristen wrote many romance novels and joined organizations such as RWA and other small writing groups. She spent countless hours in workshops, and more mornings than she can count up before the dawn so she could write before going to work. She submitted many manuscripts to agents and editors alike, but was always told no. In the summer of 2012, the self-publishing scene was new and thriving, and Kristen had one goal: to publish just one book. It was something she longed to cross off of her bucket list.

Not only did she publish one book, she’s since published close to thirty titles, many of which have hit the USA Today, New York Times and Wall Street Journal Bestsellers lists. She continues to self publish, best known for her With Me In Seattle and Boudreaux series, and is also proud to work with William Morrow, a division of HarperCollins, with the Fusion Series.

Kristen and her husband, John, make their home in her hometown of Whitefish, Montana with their two pugs and two cats.

Release Day Blitz: Drunk Dialer by Penelope Ward

    BUY NOW

Amazon | Audio | iBooks | Nook | Kobo | Amazon Paperback

From New York Times bestselling author Penelope Ward, comes a new, sexy standalone novel.

It seemed like a good idea at the time. Look up Landon Roderick, that boy from childhood whom I’d never been able to forget—even though he so easily forgot about me—and call him.

Then again, anything sounds like a good idea when you’ve had a little too much wine before bed, right? It was supposed to be just a quick, meaningless, prank call. Instead, I went off on him—unloading thirteen years of pent-up emotions.

I didn’t think he’d call me back.

I certainly could never have anticipated the weeks of sexually tense phone conversations that followed as I got to know the man he’d become.

Turned out, Landon had never really forgotten me, either. That special connection we had was still there. I opened up to him, but there were also things about me he didn’t know. And he had his own secrets.

Over the countless hours we talked on the phone, I wondered what would happen if we actually saw each other. One night, I did something impulsive again. Only this time, I went to the airport and booked a ticket to California. We were about to find out if one phone call could bring two lost souls together or if my drunk dial really was all just a big mistake.

A complete STANDALONE.
