If you're on Instagram and follow the bookish community, then you've probably seen the adorable book sleeves made by Book Beau
. I have been pining after them ever since I first saw them, but the $20 price tag with almost $5 shipping seemed too much for me. But seeing as I carry a book everywhere
with me, I knew that they would come in handy. Since my mom is a quilter and I learned to sew when I was pretty young (though I haven't used a machine in years), I decided to ask her if we could try to make them ourselves.
I went to JoAnn's and bought these three adorable fabrics and they were so cheap! The bottom two were $5.99 a yard and the turquoise Darth Vader fabric was on sale for around $7 a yard. I got half a yard of each fabric and spent only $10 total after using a coupon. My mom had some Soft and Stable foam to use for the inside, so I was all set to work!
We looked around on the internet for a good pattern to use and found one right here
for an iPad sleeve that looked like the perfect size for what I wanted to make. We tweaked the tutorial a bit by using a thicker foam and omitting the quilting on both sides.
***I forgot to add that I sprayed 505 Temporary Adhesive spray between the foam and the fabric on the sides that I knew would be the outside of the pouch. This ensured that the outside of the pouch would be smooth and attached to the foam.
Once I had a finished product, I decided to skip the button closing in the tutorial and sew an additional large seam around the top for decoration. While my sewing is definitely not that great (the seam may or may not have ended up a bit wonky), I am so excited with how they turned out!
With the way the patterns were situated on the fabrics, I was able to make one out of each half yard for the deer and Darth Vader fabrics and two out of the blue arrow fabric. That's four total for only $10! I have some left over fabric and can't wait to make something small out of them. The fabrics are just so cute and I want to make more and more and more! I can't wait to protect my books with my adorable new book sleeves!
