Stacking the Shelves (264)

Stacking the Shelves is a meme hosted by Tynga's Reviews where bloggers share what books they got throughout the week!

From Thriftbooks

I got two books from Thriftbooks and they are both ones that have amazing reviews on Goodreads and Instagram. I haven't read a book from Harper Sloan yet, so I can't wait to get to these!

From Half Price Books

I went to Half Price Books while I dropped off my car for an oil change (it's literally the next building over from the dealership) and they had so many good books! I got Split for only $7 and I couldn't believe it was there! I've heard amazing things. I've also really wanted to read something from Jennifer Probst and this one was only $1! This was definitely a successful trip!

That's it for me! What did you all add to your shelves this week?

Cover Reveal: Bad Habit by Charleigh Rose

Title: Bad Habit
Author: Charleigh Rose
Genre: New Adult Romance
Release Date: Coming Soon

BRIAR

I was infatuated with Asher Kelley the moment he came tumbling through my brother’s window five years ago.
Even bruised and bloodied, he was the most beautiful boy I'd ever seen.
We couldn't ever be together.
I was too young, and he was too untouchable.
He was too troubled, and I was too naïve.
But the heart is rebellious, and mine decided it didn’t care about any of those things.
As I got older, harmless flirting turned to stolen moments in dark corners.
Until one day, he was gone without a trace.
Now, two years later, he’s back.
Callous and cruel.
He’s my brother’s best friend. My parents’ worst nightmare.
I should hate him.
But like a Bad Habit, I can’t quit him.
ASHER

I was drawn to Briar Vale from the first time she looked up at me with stars in her big, blue eyes.
She was just a kid, nothing but elbows and knees, but she was the most beautiful creature I'd ever seen.
We could never be together.
I was too old and she was too off limits.
She was too good and I was too fucked up.
Eventually, the temptation became too much to resist.
I risked everything for a kiss and she betrayed me.
Two years have passed and I’m forced to see her again, but now she's all grown up.
She’s my best friend’s baby sister. My downfall.
I hate her for what she did.
But she's always been my drug of choice.

Book Review: It Ain't Me, Babe by Tillie Cole

It Ain't Me, Babe (Hades Hangmen #1)
by Tillie Cole
Release Date: August 26, 2014
Source: Amazon
Sinning never felt so good… A fortuitous encounter. A meeting that should never have happened.

Many years ago, two children from completely different worlds forged a connection, a fateful connection, an unbreakable bond that would change their lives forever…

Salome knows only one way to live—under Prophet David’s rule. In the commune she calls home, Salome knows nothing of life beyond her strict faith, nor of life beyond the Fence—the fence that cages her, keeps her trapped in an endless cycle of misery. A life she believes she is destined to always lead, until a horrific event sets her free.

Fleeing the absolute safety of all she has ever known, Salome is thrust into the world outside, a frightening world full of uncertainty and sin; into the protective arms of a person she believed she would never see again.

River ‘Styx’ Nash knows one thing for certain in life—he was born and bred to wear a cut. Raised in a turbulent world of sex, Harleys, and drugs, Styx, unexpectedly has the heavy burden of the Hades Hangmen gavel thrust upon him, and all at the ripe old age of twenty-six—much to his rivals’ delight.

Haunted by a crushing speech impediment, Styx quickly learns to deal with his haters. Powerful fists, an iron jaw and the skillful use of his treasured German blade has earned him a fearsome reputation as a man not to be messed with in the shadowy world of outlaw MC’s. A reputation that successfully keeps most people far, far away.

Styx has one rule in life—never let anyone get too close. It’s a plan that he has stuck to for years, that is, until a young woman is found injured on his lot… a woman who looks uncannily familiar, a woman who clearly does not belong in his world, yet a woman he feels reluctant to let go…

Going into this book, I had no idea that the heroine would be from a cult and fall in love with the president of a Motorcycle Club. I had heard so many people rave about this series and I loved the one book I've read by Tillie Cole, so I was definitely excited to finally pick this book up!

Years ago, a boy and a girl met and never forgot one another. Through the trials and tribulations of their lives, they always sought solace in the memory of one another. Today, Salome has finally been pushed to the edge and escapes the terrifying cult that has been her life. Dying and lost, Salome stumbles upon a group of men who embody everything she's been taught is evil. River "Styx" Nash is the Hangmen Mute and may seem intimidating to all those who mess with his club, but he still has not gotten over the girl with the wolf eyes he met so many years ago. When those eyes appear in a girl who is broken and bloodied, Styx can't believe it. Styx thought he would never let anyone close enough to affect him, but Salome brings out a protective side of him that may never want to let her go.

Oh man, this book had me OBSESSED and, by the end, I found myself utterly in love with this story. While we still got the rough bad boy bikers, there was so much under Styx's character when Mae (Salome) came back into his life. I really loved how Styx had a stutter and how he had to try so hard to still seem intimidating while dealing with the disappointment in times where he really wanted to use his voice but just couldn't. And when he realized how strong his feelings for Mae were, it was so heartbreaking watching his internal struggle and how he was trying to cope with depending on another person and really opening up to them.

I don't know why, but I am fascinated by books about people who were or are in cults, so I absolutely loved Mae's character and how she was trying to escape the cult that she had grown up in. Mae was such a sheltered, innocent character because she has literally been locked away all of her life. Even though she was very naive about the outside world, she was still so strong and didn't let Styx get away with things when he messed up or didn't treat her right. She really found her place in the club, not only with Styx but also with some of the other members. I really enjoyed her journey and growth as a woman in this book.

When I got to the end, that really solidified my love for this book. So many intense things happened that I was not expecting and now I'm DYING to read more books in this series. These characters were all so unique and I already miss them after finishing Mae and Styx's story. If you love MC romances, this is definitely a staple of that genre and a must read!

About the Author

Staci has been a lot of things up to this point in her life -- a graphic designer, an entrepreneur, a seamstress, a clothing and handbag designer, a waitress. Can't forget that. She's also been a mom, with three little girls who are sure to grow up to break a number of hearts. She's been a wife, though she's certainly not the cleanest, or the best cook. She's also super, duper fun at a party, especially if she's been drinking whiskey.
From roots in Houston to a seven year stint in Southern California, Staci and her family ended up settling somewhere in between and equally north, in Denver. They are new enough that snow is still magical. When she's not writing, she's reading, sleeping, gaming, or designing graphics.

Book Review: He Will Be My Ruin by KA Tucker

He Will Be My Ruin
by KA Tucker
Release Date: February 2, 2016
Source: Half Price Books
A woman who almost had it all . . .

On the surface, Celine Gonzalez had everything a twenty-eight-year-old woman could want: a one-bedroom apartment on Manhattan’s Lower East Side, a job that (mostly) paid the bills, and an acceptance letter to the prestigious Hollingsworth Institute of Art, where she would finally live out her dream of becoming an antiques appraiser for a major auction house. All she had worked so hard to achieve was finally within her reach. So why would she kill herself?

A man who was supposed to be her salvation . . .

Maggie Sparkes arrives in New York City to pack up what’s left of her best friend’s belongings after a suicide that has left everyone stunned. The police have deemed the evidence conclusive: Celine got into bed, downed a lethal cocktail of pills and vodka, and never woke up. But when Maggie discovers a scandalous photograph in a lock box hidden in Celine’s apartment, she begins asking questions. Questions about the man Celine fell in love with. The man she never told anyone about, not even Maggie. The man Celine believed would change her life.

Until he became her ruin.

On the hunt for evidence that will force the police to reopen the case, Maggie uncovers more than she bargained for about Celine’s private life—and inadvertently puts herself on the radar of a killer. A killer who will stop at nothing to keep his crimes undiscovered.

I absolutely love KA Tucker's contemporary novels, so when I saw she was coming out with a thriller, I was definitely intrigued. The Spookathon came around and just so happened to be the perfect time to pick up this story about a woman trying to uncover the truth about her best friend's death.

Celine Gonzalez seemed like the last person to take her own life. With her dream of working with antique art finally seeming to become a reality, Celine's life was going really well. So when she appeared to have committed suicide in her apartment, Celine's best friend Maggie Sparkes is determined to find out what really happened to Celine. Maggie digs deep into Celine's life and uncovers secrets she never knew her best friend had, and soon realizes she can trust no one who was part of Celine's life before someone took it far too soon.

When this book first started, I was intrigued. I was chugging along with Maggie as she was uncovering more and more things about Celine's past that she didn't know was going on. And that's how it felt the entire time. Chugging along. There was nothing particularly scary or heart pumping or thrilling about this story. I just continued reading it so that I could finally see if Celine really was killed or if she just committed suicide like the police thought.

When it came to the characters, I still don't know if I liked Maggie's character or not. She was so quick to trust certain people and distrust others, while to me, I thought she should have been skeptical of every single person attached to Celine's life from the moment she met them. It did get a little tiring how much Maggie's wealth was brought up. We understood that she was wealthy and it was a sore spot for Celine, but we didn't need to be told over and over again.

When the ending finally came, I was underwhelmed. While it was kind of surprising when we finally figured out the truth, the end felt rushed and I didn't quite believe how things played out. Maybe it's just that I am not a huge fan of thrillers in the first place, but this one was just average and didn't leave me feeling any sort of emotion.

I wasn't supposed to fall in love with the nanny.

When my wife left, she took the illusion of happiness with her, and I've been caught in a free fall ever since. For nine long months, I've been fighting to figure out how to be a single dad, how to be alone.

For nine long months, I've been failing.

When Hannah walked through the door, I took my first breath since I'd found myself on my own. She slipped into our lives effortlessly, showing me what I've been missing all these years. Because Hannah made me smile when I thought I'd packed the notion of happiness away with my wedding album.

She was only supposed to be the nanny, but she's so much more.

The day my wife left should have been the worst day of my life, but it wasn't. It was when Hannah walked away, taking my heart with her.

Hannah

The first time I saw Charlie Parker, I didn’t see one thing at a time; I saw all of him. It was an assault on my senses, an overwhelming tide of awareness, and for a moment, the details came to me in flashes over what was probably only a few seconds but felt so much longer.
His hair was blond and gently mussed, his face long and nose elegant. I could smell him, clean and fresh with just a touch of spice I couldn’t place. I tipped my chin up—he was tall, taller than me, and I hovered just at six feet—and met his eyes, earthy and brown and so deep. So very deep.
And then he smiled.
He was handsome when he wasn’t smiling. He was stunning when he was.
I was so lost in that smile, I didn’t register the flying gob until it whapped against my sweater. Tiny splatters of something cold speckled my neck.
This was the moment the clock started again, and the sweet serenity slipped directly into chaos.
A blond little boy looked up at me from his father’s side with a devilish gleam in his dark eyes. The spoon in his hand was covered in blood-red jam and aimed at me like an empty catapult.
Several things happened at once. Charlie’s face morphed into embarrassed frustration as he reached for who I presumed to be his son. The boy—Sam, I guessed from the names I’d been given by the agency—spun around lightning fast and took off down the hallway, giggling. Another child began to cry from somewhere back in the house, and a bowl clattered to the ground, followed by a hissed swear from what sounded like an older woman.
I glanced down at the sliding, sticky mess against my white sweater and started to laugh.
Charlie’s head swiveled back to me, his face first colored with confusion, then in horror as he looked at the Pollock painting on my sweater.
“Oh my God,” he breathed, his apologetic, wide eyes dragging down my body. “Jesus, I am so sorry.”
I was still laughing, almost a little hysterical. I couldn’t even tell you why.
I waved a hand at Charlie, and he took my elbow, guiding me into the house as I caught my breath. Another crash came from the kitchen, and a little girl came toddling out into the entry, leaving powdery footprints on the hardwood.
Charlie’s face screwed up. “Sam!” he called, stretching the word, a drawn-out promise of consequences.
A riot of giggling broke out in the kitchen.
We both snapped into motion. I followed him as he scooped up his crying daughter and stormed toward the kitchen. The little girl watched me over his shoulder with big brown eyes, her breath hitching in little shudders and her small finger hooked in her mouth.
Charlie stopped so abruptly, I almost ran into him.
When I looked around him and into the kitchen, my mouth opened. I covered it with my fingers as laughter bubbled up my throat.
A bag of flour sat in the middle of the floor, the white powder thrown in bursts against the surrounding surfaces and hanging in the air like smoke. The floor next to the bag was the only clean spot, shaped like a small bottom—the little girl’s, I supposed. A bowl lay upside down, its contents oozing from under the rim and slung in a ring from ceiling to cabinet to floor, as if it had completed a masterful flip on its way to its demise. And in the center of the madness stood an older woman with flour in her dark hair and dusted down the front of her. Clutched under her arm was a wriggling Sam, offending spoon still in hand.
Her face was kind but tight with exasperation. “Please tell me this is the new nanny,” she said flatly.

“I doubt we could convince her to stay at this point,” he said with equal flatness.
