Didi Monroe’s waited her whole life for the type of romance you see in the movies, so when Hollywood heartthrob Zac Ridgemont sweeps her off her feet, Didi believes she might finally have met the one. While Zac’s away filming for the summer, Didi begins her internship at a military hospital in California. There, she meets wounded Marine Noel Walker.
Frustrated on the outside and broken on the inside, Walker’s a pain-in-the-ass patient who refuses all help.
Yet Didi can’t help but be drawn to him, and though he’s strictly out of bounds it soon becomes impossible to ignore the sparks flying between them.
As the attraction simmers into dangerous territory, Didi finds herself falling hard for a man she knows is going to break her heart. Because Walker doesn’t believe in love or happy ever afters. So what possible future can there be?
Then tragedy hits, shattering both their worlds, and Didi is forced to choose between fighting for love or merely falling for the illusion of it.
When I read Come Back to Me last year, I fell so in love with the military romance and its broken characters. When I saw that it was a series, I immediately bought the second book and couldn't wait to read Didi's story!
Didi Monroe knows her internship with a military hospital isn't going to be easy, especially when she meets Noel Walker, a Marine who was blinded when his unit was attacked. Noel is still fighting his demons from that attack and carries all of the blame on his shoulders. He isn't the friendliest soldier in the hospital, but for some reason, Didi is drawn to the brooding man. As the two spend more time together, the deeper Didi finds herself falling. But can she really fall in love with a man who is determined to forget he even has a heart?
Going into this one, I knew that it would be a very emotional romance. From the start, I loved Noel's character and how broken he was. I wanted so desperately for him to just open up to Didi and find a way to forgive himself for something that wasn't even his fault. I felt like this book represented PTSD so well and really opened my eyes to what it was like to carry the weight of the world on your shoulders after experiencing war firsthand. Noel's story was so special and I'm so happy I was able to experience it, as well as the stories of the other men we got to meet that were staying at the hospital with him.
As for the romance, I was definitely swooning over the slow development of Didi and Noel's attraction. Yes, they both fought it, but I thought it was so sweet how they both spent more time with each other and were so drawn to each other. The romance did share the storyline with other emotional moments involving other characters, which I really appreciated. Didi and Noel had to figure out how to deal with their relationships with other people along with their own budding relationship that neither one of them could really understand.
Overall, this series still remains one of my favorite military romance series I've ever read. I fall in love with every single character and my heart breaks with every obstacle they all face. If you want a deeply emotional military romance with characters that will stay in your heart for a long time after putting the book down, you have to pick up these books!
