Who better to ask for honest, snarky relationship advice than Vishous?
Ask At Your Own Risk.

Dear Vishous, Agony Aunt Column
(with help from Mary)

Dear Vishous,

First of all, thank you for doing this.  I need another perspective.  I am a 27 year old woman, about fifteen months out of a five year relationship.  I started dating a guy about two months ago.  I’ll call him “Evan.”  We met on Match.com.  We both workout.  We like a good time out at the clubs and the bars.  We’re both Sox fans.  He’s funny and he’s been good about keeping in touch when he travels frequently for work.

My problem is this.  He told me he was twenty-eight.  A week or so ago, when we were playing pool at our local, he told me to snag his wallet and pay for the next round at the bar.  While I was getting money out, I saw his driver’s license.  It said he’s thirty-six and the address listed was in a different area of the city than he told me he lives in. I got the drinks and put his wallet back in his pocket, and tried not to think about it.

But I can’t shake the idea he lied, and it’s causing me to obsess about things that are probably no big deal.  Like, he only comes to stay at my place.  I’ve never been to his apartment, and when I asked about this, he said he has two roommates who get on his nerves and he prefers the break he gets when he sleeps at my apartment.  And I’ve introduced him to my friends, but he’s never offered to do the same.  At first, I was psyched because my ex never wanted to hang with my people.  But now?  I guess I’m uneasy and looking for shadows everywhere.

I don’t care how old he is, and I know that some times folks on Match fudge their age to make them more attractive.  And maybe it’s just an old license.  I don’t want to ruin a good thing by looking like I’m second guessing him about stuff that only appears iffy and for which there is a reasonable explanation.

Please advise,

On The Fence In Beantown

#################

Vishous:  Here’s what you need to do.  Go to your local Stahp ‘n Shahp and get some Sweet Baby Ray’s  BBQ.  Then get a good knife.  After you slice his b*lls off, marinate them and then pan fry ‘em.  Serve them to him hot and spicy and-

Mary:  Okaaaaaaay.  Let’s just all take a deep breath here.

V:  I know, because the BBQ sauce smells great, right?

Mary:  Ah, no.  It’s because we should not settle this type of conflict through bodily harm.

V:  Whatever, that lying sack of sh*t with the fake Match profile doesn’t deserve a set of nuts.  S’all I’m sayin’.

Mary:  I think we’ve heard your point of view loud and clear.  And now, I’d like to offer a more nuanced opinion.  On The Fence, it’s clear that there are some reasons to be concerned about this guy.  One of the things that I tell people in my practice is to always trust your instincts.  As much as you want to believe the best-

V:  Fine.  No BBQ sauce, then.  Just slice, dice and toss ‘em in the pan.  He doesn’t deserve Sweet Baby Ray’s.

Mary:  ................

V:  What.  Oh, come on, don’t look at me like that.

Mary:  I’ve never actually said this before to someone, but why don’t you light up a cigarette and take a few deep drags.

V:  I thought you’d never ask.

Mary:  Anyway, On The Fence, my suggestion is that you have a frank, face-to-face conversation with “Evan.”  Share your concerns calmly and succinctly.  See what his answers are.  Based on how he responds, you should be able to tell a lot.  Is he listening to you and taking you seriously?  Is he offering to have you stay over at his place?  Or is he defensive and turning everything back on you-

V:  And his Red Sox card is revoked.  He has to root for the Yankees now.

Mary:  -in a way that makes you uncomfortable?  At the end of the day, you deserve to be in a relationship with someone who’s as honest as you are and treats you the way you’re treating them.

V:  I have to agree with Mary on this one.  Even though you’re a human, being with a lying sack of sh*t is whack.

Mary:  Remember, your physical safety comes first, and fast on its heels is your emotional health.  Please do not sacrifice your happiness just because you are hoping that “Evan” is the one-

V:  I think you’re going to find out he’s got a wife and kids and he’s playing you.  Which brings us back to my solution to the problem-

Mary: -and let us know how it goes, please.  Best of luck!

V:  F**k him!  Go get a real man- and that skillet.

Blurb

There’s a fine line between lust and hate.

I don’t care that Drew Merritt spent the last year transforming himself from grungy slob to sexy playboy. With messy, dirty blond hair and gorgeous eyes, his looks aren’t the problem.

His mouth is.

And the stupid things that come out of it.

But after an emergency strands us together, and he does his damnedest to take care of me…

Let’s just say there’s one thing we don’t clash on.

And it doesn’t involve talking.

I’ve despised Drew since I met him years ago. One weekend can’t change us that much, can it?

Spoiler alert: It doesn’t.

Except he left me a little keepsake.

And in nine months, I’ll have a surprise for Portland’s most notorious player.

Lex Martin

Lex writes contemporary romance, the sexy kind with lotsa angst, a whole lotta kissing, and the hot happily ever afters. When she's not writing, she lives a parallel life as an English teacher.

She loves printing black and white photos, listening to music on vinyl, and getting lost in a great book. Bitten by wanderlust, she's  lived all over the country but currently resides in the City of Angels with her husband and twin daughters.

Lex is represented by Kimberly Brower of Brower Literary & Management.

Leslie McAdam

Leslie McAdam is a California girl who loves romance, Little Dude, and well-defined abs. She lives in a drafty old farmhouse on a small orange tree farm in Southern California with her husband and two small children. Leslie always encourages her kids to be themselves - even if it means letting her daughter wear leopard print from head to toe. An avid reader from a young age, she will always trade watching TV for reading a book, unless it's Top Gear. Or football. Leslie is employed by day but spends her nights writing about the men you fantasize about. She's unapologetically sarcastic and notoriously terrible at comma placement.

Always up for a laugh, Leslie tries to see humor in all things. When she's not in the writing cave you'll find her fangirling over Beck, camping with her family, or mixing up oil paints to depict her love of outdoors on canvas.

I am a huge fan of Lex Martin, especially her Dearest series. I have never read one of her co-written books, but this one sounded too cute to pass up!

Kendall hates Drew Merritt with every fiber of her being. Seeing as he's her best friend's husband's best friend, though, there's no ignoring him. Disgusted by his constant partying and rude behavior, Kendall would be happy to never see him again. But they're forced to spend time together when their mutual best friends invite them to a Thanksgiving getaway in the mountains. When the snowstorm is heavier than expected, Kendall and Drew are snowed in and Kendall learns that Drew has changed and may not be the immature playboy she always thought he was.

Based on the title, I knew going in that this was going to have a surprise pregnancy trope. I normally hate books that spring that up in a book, but I think knowing about it going in, I wasn't as annoyed. I will say, we still did have to wait until half of the book before Kendall learned she was pregnant, which I wasn't a huge fan of. I was just waiting and waiting for it to happen and felt like half the book was too long to wait to have something happen that you were told about in both the synopsis and the title of the book.

That little pet peeve aside, though, this book was so stinking cute and I found myself smiling more than once over Drew's character. Yeah, Drew had a pretty rocky past, but he changed and he was so darn cute with how much he cared for Kendall and really wanted to take care of her. Of course, Kendall was hesitant to trust him after all he'd done in their past, but he really was a changed man and I loved how earnest he was and how determined he was to show Kendall that he wasn't messing around and that he really wanted to work things out with her.

If you want a super cute romance between two people who used to hate each other, I definitely think you'll enjoy Surprise, Baby! Kendall is a strong professional woman with her own company and Drew is a reformed playboy who is ready to finally land the woman of his dreams. They seem like an unlikely pair, but you won't be able to help but swoon as they fall in love!

Book Review: Field Notes on Love by Jennifer E Smith

Field Notes on Love
by Jennifer E Smith
Release Date: March 5th, 2019
Source: Publisher
Having just been dumped by his girlfriend, British-born Hugo is still determined to take his last-hurrah-before-college train trip across the United States. One snag: the companion ticket is already booked under the name of his ex, Margaret Campbell. Nontransferable, no exceptions.

Enter the new Margaret C. (Mae for short), an aspiring filmmaker with big dreams. After finding Hugo's spare ticket offer online, she's convinced it's the perfect opportunity to expand her horizons.

When the two meet, the attraction is undeniable, and both find more than they bargained for. As Mae pushes Hugo to explore his dreams for his future, he'll encourage her to channel a new, vulnerable side of her art. But when life off the train threatens the bubble they've created for themselves, will they manage to keep their love on track?

I love a cute YA romance, so when I saw that Jennifer E Smith was coming out with a romance that took place on a train ride, I was so intrigued and knew I had to pick it up.

The summer before leaving for college, Hugo and his girlfriend decided to go on a cross-country trainride to California before they're separated for school, her in California and him home in England. But when Hugo's girlfriend dumps him and tells him to still go on the trip, Hugo finds himself in need of a girl with his girlfriend's exact name, seeing as her tickets are all non-refundable and non-transferable. Mae has wanted to be a filmmaker for as long as she can remember, so when she is rejected from her dream film school, she is devastated. Lost and unsure of how convince the admissions board that she really is good enough, Mae answers an ad to go on a train trip with a complete stranger. Mae and Hugo embark on a journey together where they learn more about themselves than they could ever have known.

From the start, I absolutely adored Hugo and his family. Hugo's parents are so adorable and I loved how Hugo was a sextuplet. His entire family was so quintessentially British and quirky that my favorite scenes were of Hugo interacting with his five siblings. I definitely remember the weird in-between sate of the summer before freshmen year of college and I think Jennifer E Smith embodied that state so well with both Hugo and Mae's characters. They really didn't know what path was right for them and were trying to find a little self discovery along the way of their train journey.

While this book does take place in a short amount of time, I never felt like the romance was insta-lovey. I really liked how Hugo and Mae felt kind of awkward with each other at first since they had never met, but how they opened up to each other because of the fact that they were strangers. There was an inexplicable trust that grew into something more. I can only think of the word "adorable" to describe this romance because that's exactly what it was.

If you're in the mood for a cute romance about two people who are just trying to figure out who they really are as individuals, you really need to pick up Field Notes on Love. I loved the backdrop of a cross country train ride to this romance with quirky characters and supportive, lovable family members that give the story more to love.
