Shatter (True Believers #4)

Release Date: September 2, 2014

Summary: Kylie Warner prides herself on being optimistic, but after finding her best friend in bed with her boyfriend and flunking chemistry, her upbeat attitude has taken a dive. Even an impromptu hook-up with her sexy new chemistry tutor only brightens her mood slightly. After all, it’s not like she’ll ever see the tattooed scholar again…

While he’s a whiz at complex equations, Jonathon Kadisch has trouble when it comes to figuring out women. So when Kylie tells him that she’s pregnant after their night of passion, he’s at a complete loss. He’s prepared to be a good father—unlike his own deadbeat dad—but he’s less prepared to fall for the genuine and alluring blonde bearing his child.

With emotions running high, Kylie wonders if Jonathon’s devotion is out of growing love or looming obligation. And when heartbreak threatens to tear them apart, Jonathon will have to fight for the only girl who’s ever made him feel whole…

Review: I went into Shatter thinking it was going to be a cute story about a girl and a guys with an intense physical connection that are forced to find something deeper. In the end, though, there was so much more emotion and feeling than I had anticipated, but definitely in a good way.

Kylie Warner knows that she's not the sharpest tool in the shed, but she likes to think she's happy with her life. Until her boyfriend cheats on her with her best friend and she's failing chemistry, that is. Kylie decides to find a chemistry tutor to at least try to fix one of her problems and ends up finding the incredibly smart, yet incredibly sexy Jonathon Kadisch. The last thing she expects, though, is to wind up pregnant after one passionate night with Jonathon. Jonathon's prepared to fill in the shoes of a loving father, something his own father never did, and help Kylie out with their future baby. Kylie knows not to expect an actual relationship with Jonathon, but the more time they spend together, the harder it is to resist the intense attraction they gave into on that one, life changing night.

From the start, Kylie is pretty impossible not to like. She's such a bubbly, optimistic person and truly tries to find the good in people. Sure, she's not exactly book smart, but she tries hard and values the relationships in her life. Jonathon, though, is what really sealed the deal on this book with me. Talk about hot. Jonathon is pretty much a genius but doesn't let that go to his head. He's an incredibly sweet guy who doesn't want to end up like his cold-hearted father, so he tries his best to give Kylie what she needs while she carries his baby. The chemistry between him and Kylie is undeniable and I love how adorable they are together. He really cares about her and does the sweetest things in his own super-smart way. It did get a bit annoying by the end, though, with how insecure Kylie became with her lack of intelligence. She becomes super sensitive about how she isn't as smart as Jonathon and I could have down without that constant insecurity.

Onto the more serious side of the book. Things happen (I don't want to give away too much) that really test Kylie and Jonathon and the relationship they've started. Can they really bring a baby into this world as just friends? Kylie and Jonathon are forced to change their lives after one night together and that really changes their individual persons as well. While I think things wrapped up a little too sweetly and neatly in the end, it was still emotional watching Kylie and Jonathon deal with the hurtles life threw their way.

As my first novel from Erin McCarthy, I'm satisfied to say it was quite an enjoyable one. There was romance, passion, emotion, and a sexy and smart man to fall in love with. Fans of the new adult genre should definitely check out Erin McCarthy's True Believers series. I'm excited to get my hands on the first three novels of the series to see how Kylie's friends all fell in love and became the adorable couples they come to be in this novel.
