Stacking the Shelves (267)

Stacking the Shelves is a meme hosted by Tynga's Reviews where bloggers share what books they got throughout the week!

From Half Price Books

Last weekend was the end of coupon week at Half Price Books, so Saturday was 40% off one item and Sunday was 50% off one item. I went to two stores on Satruday and four stores on Sunday and my mom and sister tagged along on Sunday. That meant I got a lot of books, all at half the price of the Half Price Books price. And some stores had so many self-publisehd books! So I picked up some goodies and even got some Christmas gifts bought! It was a fabulous weekend!

From Author

I received an e-arc of Bad Habit by Charleigh Rose and gobbled it up. There was so much angst and emotion and I loved it! You all need to grab yourselves a copy now!

That's it for me! What did you all add to your shelves this week?

Book Review: Bad Habit by Charleigh Rose

Bad Habit (Bad Love #1)
by Charleigh Rose
Release Date: November 16, 2017
Source: Author
BRIAR
I was infatuated with Asher Kelley the moment he came tumbling through my brother’s window five years ago.
Even bruised and bloodied, he was the most beautiful boy I'd ever seen.
We couldn't ever be together.
I was too young, and he was too untouchable.
He was too troubled, and I was too naive.
But the heart is rebellious, and mine decided it didn’t care about any of those things.
As I got older, harmless flirting turned to stolen moments in dark corners.
Until one day, he was gone without a trace.
Now, three years later, he’s back.
Callous and cruel.
He’s my brother’s best friend. My parents’ worst nightmare.
I should hate him.
But like a Bad Habit, I can’t quit him.

ASHER
I was drawn to Briar Vale from the first time she looked up at me with stars in her big, blue eyes.
She was just a kid, nothing but elbows and knees, but she was the most beautiful creature I'd ever seen.
We could never be together.
I was too old and she was too off limits.
She was too good and I was too fucked up.
Eventually, the temptation became too much to resist.
I risked everything for a kiss and she betrayed me.
Three years have passed and I’m forced to see her again, but now she's all grown up.
She’s my best friend’s baby sister. My downfall.
I hate her for what she did.
But she's always been my drug of choice.

I became a huuuggeee fan of Charleigh Rose when I read her previous release, Misbehaved, over the summer. Ever since then, I have been dying for a new, angsty release. When I saw Bad Habit, I knew I had to read it as soon as I could get my hands on it!

Briar Vale knows she shouldn't want her older brother's best friend. But when he stumbles through her window bloodied and broken, she knows she needs him as much as he needs her. She knows Asher is determined to leave his life behind, but he promises to never leave without saying goodbye. And then he does. Three years have passed and Asher Vale is back in town. He is as angry as the day he left and is determined to ignore Briar Vale, the girl he's wanted even when he knew he could never have her. Asher tries to hate Briar and remind himself that she's his best friend's baby sister, but the moment they lock eyes, they fall into a whirlwind of insane chemistry, irresistible temptation, and emotion that neither of them can ignore.

Holy cow. Can I just say how much I freaking loved this book? This reminded me so much of Bully by Penelope Douglas with the angst and hate, yet the undeniable chemistry, and I loved every second of it. I really appreciated how there was a prologue of the past where Briar and Asher first acknowledged their feelings for each other, only for Asher to disappear without a trace. We really understood the depth of their emotions for one another, both the good and the bad emotions that were so prominent in their lives in the present. So when Asher sneaks back into Briar's life, you understand their anger towards one another, but you also are OBSESSED with their insane chemistry and understanding of one another. Did I mention the angst? Because there was SO MUCH ANGST and I was living for it.

Not only was I obsessed with Briar and Asher's angry and emotional relationship, but I also loved the cast of characters present in both of their lives. Asher is best friends with Dash, Briar's older brother, and Adrian. I loved the dynamic between the three guys and how protective they all were over Briar. I also loved Natalia, Briar's best friend, and how supportive yet real she was with Briar. I definitely need a book about every single side character now!

Overall, if you love angst, insane chemistry, and a relationship that has a long, complicated past, you definitely have to pick up Bad Habit. I was addicted to this story and so in love with Briar and Asher! Can I have the next book in the series? Like, now please?

Book Review: On the Way to You by Kandi Steiner

On the Way to You

What makes you happy?

That was the question Emery Reed asked me the day we met, and I couldn’t give him a single answer. I could have said my dog, or my books, or yoga — but I just stared.

And then, I got in his car.

It was crazy to take a road trip with a stranger, but after years of standing still, he was my one-way ticket to a new life, and I wasn’t going to miss it.

We shared the same space, the same car, the same hotel room — and still, we were strangers. One day we’d be laughing, the next, we wouldn’t speak. Emery was surrounded by impenetrable walls, but I wanted in.

Discovering his journal changed everything.

I read his thoughts, words not meant for anyone’s eyes, and the more I learned about him, the harder I fell. It turned out nothing made Emery Reed happy, and I wanted to change that.

I earned his trust by violating his privacy, and as wrong as it was, it worked — until one entry revealed a darkness I never knew existed, a timer I never knew was ticking.

Suddenly, what made me happy was saving Emery from himself. I just didn’t know if I could.

Ever since I found Kandi's books in January, I have wanted to gobble up every book she's written. When I saw that she had a book coming out in November, I knew that I had to have it. It sounded as emotional as A Love Letter to Whiskey and I couldn't wait to pick it up!

Cooper always looks on the bright side and thought she was happy. She has her dog, her yoga, and her books. But when Emery Reed walks into the diner she's working at and offers her an out, Cooper knows she has to take it. Throwing her things into a bag, grabbing her dog, and hopping in the car, Emery finds herself on an emotional, whirlwind adventure to a future she's nervous for with a boy who makes her even more nervous and seems eve more lost than she could have ever imagined.

In the beginning, it was impossible not to like Cooper's character. She was such an intriguing character and I loved how much she had grown in her life. I will say that I wish we had more direct contact between her and her family so that we could understand that dynamic more. We barely got any interaction, so I didn't really feel the emotion she had towards that relationship. Her dog, though, was so adorable and I loved how realistic Kandi made having a dog on a road trip. Nothing makes me more annoyed than dogs being left alone for hours and hours with no mention in a novel. Cooper definitely took care of her adorable pup!

While this book did end up being super emotional, I found it hard to actually understand Cooper's relationship with Emery. I feel like he never did anything for Cooper to fall for him other than the fact that she read his journal. When they were together, he never did anything that really made me think he was a redeemable guy. Sure, he had such a heart-wrenching story, but we got a lot of that through his journal, not actually through him. Maybe I just missed that connection, but I wasn't as all in on the romance as I wanted to be.

In the end, Kandi did not disappoint in delivering an emotional romance. I really enjoyed Cooper's character and her journey throughout this book. While I was so mad at her every time she picked up Emery's journal and invaded his privacy, I definitely understood her desire to understand what was going through his mind. If you want an emotional road trip new adult romance, you should definitely pick up On the Way to You.

Cover Reveal: Sex, Not Love by Vi Keeland

My relationship with Hunter Delucia started backwards.

We met at a wedding—him sitting on the groom’s side, me sitting on the bride’s.  Stealing glances at each other throughout the night, there was no denying an intense, mutual attraction.

I caught the bouquet; he caught the garter.  Hunter held me tightly while we danced and suggested we explore the chemistry sparking between us.  His blunt, dirty mouth should’ve turned me off.  But for some crazy reason, it had the opposite effect on me.

We ended up back in my hotel room.  The next morning, I headed home to New York leaving him behind in California with the wrong number.

I thought about him often, but after my last relationship, I’d sworn off of charming, cocky, gorgeous-as-sin men. A year later, Hunter and I met again at the birth of our friends’ baby.  Our attraction hadn't dulled one bit.  After a whirlwind trip, he demanded a real phone number this time.  So I left him with my mother’s—she could scare away any man with her talks of babies and marriage—and flew back home.

I’d thought it was funny, until the following week when he rang the bell at Mom’s house for Sunday night dinner.  The crazy, gorgeous man had won over my mother and taken an eight-week assignment in my city.  He proposed we spend that time screwing each other out of our systems.

Eight weeks of mind-blowing sex with no strings attached? What did I have to lose?

Nothing, I thought.
It’s just sex, not love.
But you know what they say about the best laid plans…

Eventually, the principal caught on and the newspaper was quickly halted, though Kandi tried fighting for her “freedom of press.” She took particular interest in writing romance after college, as she has always been a die hard hopeless romantic (like most girls brought up on Disney movies). When Kandi isn’t working or writing, you can find her reading books of all kinds, talking with her extremely vocal cat, and spending time with her friends and family. She enjoys beach days, movie marathons, live music, craft beer and sweet wine – not necessarily in that order.

Book Review: Wish You Were Mine by Tara Sivec

Wish You Were Mine
by Tara Sivec
Release Date: November 14, 2017
Source: Publisher
Five years. I would’ve stayed away longer if I hadn’t received the letter. Not a day has gone by that I haven’t thought about her, haven’t missed her smile, haven’t wished that things were different.

The last time I saw my two best friends, I vowed to not stand in the way of their happiness, even if that meant I couldn’t be a part of their lives. Cameron James and her emerald-green eyes were too much of a temptation and I couldn’t stay and watch them together. Cameron deserved better than me. She deserved him.

But now that I am back, things are different. I’m not going to stand by and watch the woman I’ve always loved slip away again. I’m done living my life with regrets and I’m ready to tell her the truth. And I’ll do whatever it takes to show her that I always wished she was mine.

Believe it or not, I have never read a Tara Sivec novel until now. I have seen so many good things about her books, so when I had the chance to review her newest release, I knew it was my time to finally pick one up!

Everett has been gone for five years. And for five years, he hasn't spoken one word to Cameron James, the girl who stole his heart when they first met as kids, but also the girl he knows he can never be good enough for. Cameron is angry. For five years, she hasn't seen or heard from Everett and he struts into her camp like no time has passed at all. But Cameron finds herself needing Everett to save their camp for military families and kids and she'll do anything to save the place that was her entire childhood and future.

Wow, from the moment this book starts, you are hit with an immense amount of emotions. Everett and Cameron's best friend to their trio since they were kids has passed away and both of them are trying to recover. Everett has been gone for five years, though, and doesn't know how to reinsert himself into Cameron's life. I was in love with Cameron and Everett and was rooting for them so hard to make it work and get together. Both of them, though, are so broken at the beginning of this book and it's heartbreaking watching them try to learn to trust each other and get over the fears that have been plaguing them their whole lives.

I will say, the ending was pretty predictable and I was just waiting for the predictable stuff to happen when the rest of the story kind of slowed down a bit. Other than that, though, I really loved this book and the little quirks that made Everett and Cameron's relationship so special. I loved their connection to their friend that had died and their long, heartbreaking history together. And talk about a slow burn romance! There was so much chemistry between them but also so much history that made them resistant to that chemistry.

While this was my first Tara Sivec book, this is definitely not going to be my last! She delivered so much emotion, heartache, and strong physical attraction that I could not put this book down. I was obsessed with Everett and Cameron for about 80% of the book until things slowed down and got a little predictable. Other than that, though, this book was amazing and such a sweet romance!
