Although beautiful young widow Phoebe, Lady Clare, has never met West Ravenel, she knows one thing for certain: he's a mean, rotten bully. Back in boarding school, he made her late husband's life a misery, and she'll never forgive him for it. But when Phoebe attends a family wedding, she encounters a dashing and impossibly charming stranger who sends a fire-and-ice jolt of attraction through her. And then he introduces himself...as none other than West Ravenel.
West is a man with a tarnished past. No apologies, no excuses. However, from the moment he meets Phoebe, West is consumed by irresistible desire...not to mention the bitter awareness that a woman like her is far out of his reach. What West doesn't bargain on is that Phoebe is no straitlaced aristocratic lady. She's the daughter of a strong-willed wallflower who long ago eloped with Sebastian, Lord St. Vincent—the most devilishly wicked rake in England.
Before long, Phoebe sets out to seduce the man who has awakened her fiery nature and shown her unimaginable pleasure. Will their overwhelming passion be enough to overcome the obstacles of the past?
Only the devil's daughter knows...
I do not get to read historical romances enough, so any time a favorite author of mine comes out with a new one, I try my hardest to get to it. I was definitely not going to miss out on a new release from Lisa Kleypas!
Phoebe always knew that she would lose her husband early, but it doesn't stop her from mourning the love of her life when he passes away while trying to raise her two young children. When she runs into West Ravel, a man who she knows made her late husband's life miserable when they were in school, Phoebe is furious with the man. The more she gets to know West, though, the more Phoebe sees a man who has changed and truly cares about the people he works with. There is an undeniable desire between the two, but Phoebe isn't ready to settle down quite yet and West knows he could never be a family man. When Phoebe's farms seem to be on the decline, she calls in a favor from West and the two aren't sure they can really live without one another.
When this book started, I loved how stubborn Phoebe was when it came to West. She was determined to see him as the scoundrel her husband had described him as being. As the two had insane chemistry, it was fun seeing them banter and actually start to enjoy each other's company. It was adorable seeing how great West was with Phoebe's children and how Phoebe saw him as an intelligent, charming man. And can we talk about Galoshes!? One of my favorite characters of the whole book!
As with historical romances, the time period played a really important part in this book. I really enjoyed how the social norms and etiquette played a big part in how Phoebe determined what she did after her husband died and how she could act around West. I also loved how Phoebe oftentimes pushed those norms, especially when it came to gender roles. Phoebe was such a headstrong character and would not listen to what others tried to tell her to do. She had such a good heart and wanted to do what was best for everyone, not just herself.
Lisa Kleypas definitely delivered with her newest historical romance. She created a fun, hate to love romance between a single mom and a charming man with a not so charming past. I loved all of the characters and the world Lisa Kleypas created. If you're in the mood for a good historical romance, look no further! Pick up Devil's Daughter! Now!
