Book Review: Moonshot by Alessandra Torre

Baseball isn’t supposed to be a game of life and death…

The summer that Chase Stern entered my life, I was seventeen. The daughter of a legend, the Yankees were my family, their stadium my home, their dugout my workplace. My focus was on the game. Chase... he started out as a distraction. A distraction with sex appeal poured into every inch of his six foot frame. A distraction who played like a god and partied like a devil.

I tried to stay away. I couldn’t.

Then, the team started losing.
Women started dying.
And everything in my world broke apart.

I love a good sports romance, so when I saw this was coming out back in 2016, I knew I had to have it. Almost two years later, though, an this book was STILL sitting on my shelves! I finally got the motivation I needed, though, and devoured this book in one day.

Ty has lived and breathed Yankees baseball ever since she started to live with her father when she was very young. Everything was easy. She loved the team and they loved her. Until Chase Stern came to play for the team. Chase is a notorious lady's man who is one of the best players in the league. Ty knows she should stay away from him and resist his charm. But she can't. And that one decision changes the rest of her life forever.

HOLY COW THIS BOOK. The first 100 pages are pure angst and I was SO FOR IT. I loved how Ty tried so hard not to like Chase, but he was too irresistible. Even Ty's father knew Chase being on the team would affect Ty, but Chase saw something refreshing in Ty and they had such insane chemistry. Then, there was a plot twist and I LOST IT. This book had me feeling so many emotions and I was so invested in this story that I literally could not put it down.

The baseball in this book was everything and I loved how involved with the team Ty was. Then, there was the whole murder mystery aspect that was so intriguing and definitely had me surprised at the end. And even with all of the obstacles thrown into their way, I was rooting for Chase and Ty until the very end. While this was a romance, it was also a mystery/suspense novel, which definitely kept me on my toes.

If you can't tell, I absolutely LOVED this book and can't believe that it took me so long to read. It had the angst I loved in the sports romance genre that I'm obsessed with. There wasn't a dull moment in this book and it definitely pulled out all sorts of emotions from me! If you haven't had the chance yet, you HAVE To pick up Moonshot!

Synopsis

From NYT Bestseller Corinne Michaels & USA Today Bestseller Melanie Harlow, comes a second chance standalone romance.

Ian Chase broke my heart at seventeen, and I’ve spent the last eighteen years hating him for it.
He makes it easy, with his smart mouth and playboy lifestyle—which I unfortunately have to observe since he lives behind me. Every time I see him climbing out of his pool, practically naked and unreasonably sexy, my blood boils.
I’ve always loved to loathe him.
I never planned to need him.

***

London Parish is my little sister’s best friend, not that it stopped me from falling for her.
Our history is complicated. The only thing we have in common is being godparents to my sister’s three adorable kids—until our lives are changed in one tragic moment.
Now we’re trying to raise the children we love, mourn an unthinkable loss, and fight an undeniable attraction.
My life is already upside-down, and the last thing I need is for old feelings to resurface.
Because I’ll never be able to keep her, no matter how hard I try to hold her close.

Book Review: Off the Grid by Monica McCarty

Off the Grid (The Lost Platoon #2)
by Monica McCarty
Release Date: July 3, 2018
Source: Publisher
A hunt for dangerous secrets leads to explosive chemistry in this exhilarating romantic suspense novel from the New York Times bestselling author of Going Dark.

A team of Navy SEALs go on a mission and disappear without a trace--they are The Lost Platoon.

Investigative reporter Brittany Blake may have stumbled upon the story of a lifetime in her search for her missing brother. When he seemingly disappears overnight, she refuses to accept the Navy's less-than-satisfying explanation. She begins her own investigation, which leads her to top-secret SEAL teams, covert ops, and a possible cover up...

John Donovan is having trouble biding his time, waiting for his Commanding Officer to figure out who set up their platoon. John's best friend and BUD/S partner, Brandon Blake, was one of the many lives tragically lost in the attack against his team. When Brandon's sister, Brittany, tracks John down, looking for answers, he realizes that she may be their best bet--or bait--for finding out who is targeting SEAL Team Nine.

After reading Going Dark, I really loved the characters of this series and trying to uncover what really happened to the Lost Platoon that caused them to have to go into hiding. I was excited to read about another one of the SEAL members and watch him fall in love!

Brittany Blake has a gut feeling that her brother isn't okay, and as an investigative reporter, she's learned to trust her gut. The problem is, the more she digs into her brother's disappearance, the more danger she puts herself in. John Donovan swore to his best friend that he wouldn't hurt his sister, Brittany, but when she starts sticking her nose where it doesn't belong, John knows he has to do something to stop it, especially when she tracks John down to where he's hiding out. John has to distract Brittany from uncovering the government secret that's putting lives at danger, but the more he spends time with Brittany, the harder he finds it to keep his hands off of her.

From the moment this book started, I really enjoyed Brittany's character and how she's a different person from who she was when she shared a kiss with John years ago. Now, she's not putting up with his crap and she's finally sticking up for herself. I admired Brittany's determination as a writer and a sister to find out what really happened to her brother's SEAL team. It was fun watching John not know what to do with this new version of Brittany or with his feelings that were harder and harder to ignore.

While this is a romantic suspense story, I found that it was a little lacking in the action department. I loved how they traveled around together, but I think that the middle chunk of the book kind of dragged by as they were waiting to figure out who the real threat to Brittany and John were. Even then, we didn't really get any of the answers I wanted. I understand that this is a series and the author needs to keep us hooked for the next story in the series, but I wanted more answers!

Overall, I really did enjoy this romance and Brittany and John's relationship. While the pacing was a bit slow and I wanted more action, I enjoyed the mystery behind who really set the SEAL team up and who was after Brittany. For an entertaining romantic suspense series, I definitely recommend picking these books up!

Book Review: Welcome to the Dark Side by Giana Darling

Welcome to the Dark Side (The Fallen Men #2)
by Giana Darling
Release Date: April 20, 2018
Source: Kindle Unlimited
I was a good girl.
I ate my vegetables, volunteered at the local autism centre and sat in the front pew of church every Sunday.
Then, I got cancer.
What the hell kind of reward was that for a boring life well lived?
I was a seventeen-year-old paradigm of virtue and I was tired of it.
So, when I finally ran into the man I'd been writing to since he saved my life as a little girl and he offered to show me the dark side of life before I left it for good, I said yes.
Only, I didn't know that Zeus Garro was the President of The Fallen MC and when you made a deal with a man who is worse than the devil, there was no going back...

This is Daddy Zeus Garro's story from Lessons In Corruption. A standalone in The Fallen Men Series.

I have heard so much hype about this MC series and while I enjoyed the first book, I was SO EXCITED to finally read Zeus's story. I knew there was going to be an age gap, which is a trope I'm super picky about, but I couldn't wait to see if it was going to be as good of a book as I thought it was going to be.

Ever since he saved her life in a downpour of bullets, Lou has been writing letters to Zeus Garro through all of the trials throughout her life, including going through cancer. Now, Lou is 17 and she's tired of being the good girl who listens to her parents and does no wrong. And what better way to be bad than to finally make herself a part of Zeus's life? Zeus knows his attraction to Lou is wrong, especially considering she's his daughter's age, but he's drawn in by her light and her desire to get to know the dark side she knows he can offer...

Like I said, I am super picky about big age gaps in books, so I wasn't sure how this how going to go, especially since this was such a big age gap. The beginning of this book begins with Lou and Zeus meeting when Lou is a little girl and then continues through her childhood writing letters to Zeus. I really enjoyed this because it was just a friendship between a girl and her savior, with the romantic side not coming up until Lou is 17 and finally meets Zeus in real life again, which is well into this book. I appreciated how loyal Zeus was to his family and how he tried so hard not to like Lou in that way, but couldn't help himself when he saw how mature she was after having gone through cancer and fending for herself in life with a crappy family. And considering Lou wasn't going to take no for an answer, it was no surprise that Zeus eventually gave in to both of their desires.

While I wasn't satisfied with the action in book one, the action and suspense was spot on with this book. I fell in love with the characters Lou grew closer to, especially the MC members, and I was FREAKING OUT when danger came and they didn't know who they could trust in the club. I loved seeing Cress and King from book one and I am SO READY for Harleigh Rose's book! Like I said, this book had so many lovable characters, as well as a pretty hot romance, and it only made me want even more once I read the last page!

Every Motorcycle Romance fan NEEEEEDS to pick up this series! While I enjoyed book one, I devoured and was obsessed with this book. Everyone needs Daddy Zeus in their lives!

Book Review: Lessons in Corruption by Giana Darling

Lessons in Corruption
by Giana Darling
Release Date: December 1, 2017
Source: Kindle Unlimited
He was eighteen.
The heir to a notorious, criminal MC.
And my student.

There was no way I could get involved.
No way I could stay involved.
Then, no way I could get out alive.

Book One in The Fallen Men series. A standalone.

It's no secret that I love a good motorcycle romance, so when one of my instagram friends recommended this series to me, I went to amazon and immediately downloaded it from KU.

After finally leaving her husband, Cress finds herself living for herself for the first time. And that means starting a fling with a hot biker she met at the grocery store. Cress is finally giving into the desires she's hidden deep inside of herself, even though her parents are determined to make her see the error in her ways. When Cress realizes that her new student happens to be the biker she's started an intense relationship with, she freaks. Can she really be the kind of woman who breaks all of the rules just to finally be herself?

I had super high expectations going into this one and, I will say, the beginning was a little slow for me. We got to meet Cress and watch her make new friends with the other teachers at school and slowly learn more about the biker way of life. When we finally got halfway through the story, though, and we got to follow Cress and King more closely as a couple, I really loved this book. I loved how she became friends with people in the gang and really became a part of their family.

I will say, Cress definitely had a very wishy-washy attitude towards her relationship with King because he was one of her students. It was a little annoying at times how she constantly pulled back with the same excuse, but King was soooo swoon-worthy and did everything he could to show Cress he was serious. Half the time, I forgot that King was 18 years old because he was so mature and had such a big role in the gang.

I really ended up enjoying this motorcycle romance and I am DYING to read Zues's story (King's dad) in the second book. If you're a motorcycle romance fan who likes their romances on the taboo side, you need to check out Lessons in Corruption!
