Author Interview: Catherine Thorpe

I am thrilled to announce that today I have an interview with the talented and wonderful Catherine Thorpe! Her debut novel In a Celandine World just came out this June. Catherine is here to tell us a little about herself and her new book!

What three words would you use to describe "In A Celandine World"?

Off the top of my head, I’d have to go with nature, love and history.

How did you get the idea of a romance with a boogyman?
I spent a great deal of time thinking about the allure that girls have with vampire-love.  What is it about these novels (or characters) that we want?  Is it the fairytale?  Or the all-consuming passion and mysteriousness of the bad-boy that sucks us in?  The premise started there somewhere.  When you read the novel, you will understand what the boogeyman is.

If you could be one character from your book, who would you be and why?
I would be Willow.  She embodies everything I am not, and she has the power of the universe at her fingertips.  Who wouldn’t want that?

Why writing? Have you always loved it or is it something new?
I’ve always loved it.  I started telling stories when I was a small child and writing them down.  When I was about 7 or 8 my parents signed me up to a book club through school and I was able to order a book or two a month.  My mother tells me that I created my own Dewey decimal system and catalogued my books on my shelf.  I even forced my sisters to sign my books out if they wanted to read one.  I suppose there was never any doubt where I would end up.

What are your inspirations when you write? When you get stuck, what do you do?
I don’t really have any inspirations.  I do a great deal of thinking, and I mull ideas over and over everywhere I go.  The stories just unfold in my mind and when I am stuck, I just leave it and mull things over some more.  I also pace a lot.  I walk circles around the yard or the dining room table.

What do you do when you're not writing?
I’m actually very boring.  I didn’t realize how boring until I had to answer this question.  What do I do when I’m not writing?  I exist.

What is your favorite book/author and why?
My favorite book is LINCOLN: THE UNKNOWN, by Dale Carnegie.  This book was such a departure from what we expect in a Dale Carnegie book.  Not only am I an Abraham Lincoln fan, this book reminds me that everyone has their dreams to follow and that there is success in diversity.

What's next?
I’m currently writing the next adventure to follow ‘in a celandine world.’

In a Celandine World by Catherine Thorpe
Summary from Goodreads: Willow Jane has a secret.  She's in love with the Boogeyman.  He comes to her in her dreams.  Lately he's been speaking to her while she's awake.  She doesn't know why he comes to her, or how it is that she loves him.  She's never even seen him.

Until now.

She's accepted crazy.  She's accepted isolation--heck, she's even welcomed it.  She'll do anything to be with him.

But now Betts Willoughby is on to her.  The mysterious wife of the village butcher watches her.  She knows things.  She believes things--things that are even crazier than Willow.

The truth is going to come out.  A truth that has long been forgotten.  A truth that was concealed in a manuscript in the 12th century.  Animpossible truth.  A dangerous truth that will blow Willow's secret wide open--leaving her scrambling to save the only man she could ever love. **Review soon to come**
