A knight in tarnished armor is still a knight.

When you’re a defense attorney in Washington, DC, you see firsthand how hard life can be, and that sometimes the only way to survive is to be harder. I, Jake Becker, have a reputation for being cold, callous, and intimidating—and that suits me just fine. In fact, it’s necessary when I’m breaking down a witness on the stand.

Complications don’t work for me—I’m a “need-to-know” type of man. If you’re my client, tell me the basic facts. If you’re my date, stick to what will turn you on. I’m not a therapist or Prince Charming—and I don’t pretend to be.

Then Chelsea McQuaid and her six orphaned nieces and nephews came along and complicated the ever-loving hell out of my life. Now I'm going to Mommy & Me classes, One Direction concerts, the emergency room, and arguing cases in the principal's office.

Chelsea’s too sweet, too innocent, and too gorgeous for her own good. She tries to be tough, but she’s not. She needs someone to help her, defend her…and the kids.

And that — that, I know how to do.

I have heard nothing but fantastic things about Emma Chase and her Tangled series. I hadn't even known that she had another series out, but when I had the chance to read the second book in The Legal Briefs series, I jumped at the chance.

Jake Becker is the kind of lawyer who gets the job done, no matter who the client is. And as far as is love life goes, it's in and out with no strings attached. Until the nephew of Chelsea McQuaid pulls him into her life, that is. One day spent with Chelsea, along with her crazy mess of six nieces and nephews, and Jake is a goner. Chelsea is a sweet, young woman who is left raising her deceased brother's kids, so to say she's in over her head is an understatement. Jake seems to fit in perfectly with their life, but Jake isn't looking to settle down, let alone settle down with six children. Can he walk away from Chelsea or is he already far too attached to ever let go?

From the start, Jake is a cold-hearted man who is in no way looking for a serious relationship. He's a hot shot lawyer who protects the slimiest of rich people because he's the best, which also means he gets paid the best. I loved it, though, how he ended up meeting Chelsea and being completely taken by her. Chelsea is so sweet and just wants to give her nieces and nephews a good life, no matter how angsty they act towards her. And wow, are those kids a riot. They each have their own personality that is so distinct and add so much to love in this book. It was so cute how Jake started to care about them and act like an adult with a real relationships and commitments for once.

I think that the romance was very adorable and definitely steamy, but I think that Jake's insecurities were a bit cliche and it just got annoying whenever he would run away because he didn't want that commitment. There's only so many times a guy can run away, go back, and then run away again before it gets old. So I wasn't a big fan of the times when Jake ran away and acted predictable based on his background as a guy who only sleeps around. However, I did enjoy the moments he got to know Chelsea and how much their relationship grew before it actually even turned into something.

Overall, this was definitely a fun read. I loved how Jake was a lawyer and his job helped him get closer to Chelsea. There was a family dynamic in the novel that you don't find in a lot of books and I loved how there were so many characters that heavily affected the main storyline. This may have been my first Emma Chase read, but it definitely won't be my last!
