A woman who defies her timeDr. Garrett Gibson, the only female physician in England, is as daring and independent as any man—why not take her pleasures like one? Yet she has never been tempted to embark on an affair, until now. Ethan Ransom, a former detective for Scotland Yard, is as gallant as he is secretive, a rumored assassin whose true loyalties are a mystery. For one exhilarating night, they give in to their potent attraction before becoming strangers again.
A man who breaks every rule
As a Ravenel by-blow spurned by his father, Ethan has little interest in polite society, yet he is captivated by the bold and beautiful Garrett. Despite their vow to resist each other after that sublime night, she is soon drawn into his most dangerous assignment yet. When the mission goes wrong, it will take all of Garrett's skill and courage to save him. As they face the menace of a treacherous government plot, Ethan is willing to take any risk for the love of the most extraordinary woman he's ever known.
I am a huge historical romance fan, but I've only read a few of Lisa Kleypas's novels. When I read the synopsis of this one and saw it was about a woman that is very independent for her time who falls for a man who is definitely not the most well-mannered man in society, I definitely knew that I wanted to pick this up.
From the beginning of this book, I fell in love with Garrett's character and how determined she was to be independent. She's a doctor and will put a man in his place if he even begins to question her ability in her profession or her ability to take care of herself. And the moment she meets Ethan they go head to head and I was all over their chemistry. SERIOUSLY. Ethan was definitely an intriguing character and it was so fun watching him try to ignore the attraction he realized he had for Garrett whenever he was around her.
While I haven't read the previous books in this series, I definitely don't feel like I missed anything. I may not have understood the side characters, but I followed along on Garrett and Ethan's journey together just fine. I loved how much they respected each other and how much they challenged each other throughout this story. Ethan really did respect Garrett and treated her as an equal. I really did love all of the side characters we got to meet as well and also how mysterious Ethan was and really fell for the Irishman. The chemistry is so strong between the two main characters and I loved the danger these two go through thanks to their respective profession. I highly recommend every historical romance fan check this book out!
