This is a meme hosted by Breaking the Spine where every Wednesday bloggers highlight a book that they are eagerly anticipating the release of!

Off the Ice (Juniper Falls #1)
By Julie Cross
Release Date: February 28, 2017
All is fair in love and hockey…

Claire O’Connor is back in Juniper Falls, but that doesn’t mean she wants to be. One semester off, that’s what she promised herself. Just long enough to take care of her father and keep the family business—a hockey bar beside the ice rink—afloat. After that, she’s getting the hell out. Again.

Enter Tate Tanley. What happened between them the night before she left town resurfaces the second they lay eyes on each other. But the guy she remembers has been replaced by a total hottie. When Tate is unexpectedly called in to take over for the hockey team’s star goalie, suddenly he’s in the spotlight and on his way to becoming just another egotistical varsity hockey player. And Claire’s sworn off Juniper Falls hockey players for good.

It’s the absolute worst time to fall in love.

For Tate and Claire, hockey isn’t just a game. And they both might not survive a body check to the heart.

-----------------------------------

I absolutely loved Whatever Life Throws at You, Julie's baseball romance that I read a few years ago. When I saw that she was coming out with a hockey romance, I flipped out. I love how the main characters have a history and now that Claire is back in town, she realizes just how much Tate has changed. Ummm and he plays hockey?! Hockey is my favorite sport to read about, so I am dying to get my hands on this book! February 28th can't come soon enough!

Book Review: Illuminae by Jay Kristoff and Amy Kaufman

Illuminae (The Illuminae Files #1)
By Jay Kristoff and Amy Kaufman
Release Date: October 20, 2015
Source: Amazon
This morning, Kady thought breaking up with Ezra was the hardest thing she’d have to do.

This afternoon, her planet was invaded.

The year is 2575, and two rival megacorporations are at war over a planet that’s little more than an ice-covered speck at the edge of the universe. Too bad nobody thought to warn the people living on it. With enemy fire raining down on them, Kady and Ezra—who are barely even talking to each other—are forced to fight their way onto an evacuating fleet, with an enemy warship in hot pursuit.

But their problems are just getting started. A deadly plague has broken out and is mutating, with terrifying results; the fleet's AI, which should be protecting them, may actually be their enemy; and nobody in charge will say what’s really going on. As Kady hacks into a tangled web of data to find the truth, it's clear only one person can help her bring it all to light: the ex-boyfriend she swore she'd never speak to again.

Told through a fascinating dossier of hacked documents—including emails, schematics, military files, IMs, medical reports, interviews, and more—Illuminae is the first book in a heart-stopping, high-octane trilogy about lives interrupted, the price of truth, and the courage of everyday heroes.

I am not a big sci-fi reader. At all. I like my sci-fi movies, but for some reason I never pick up the genre in book form. With all of the hype surrounding Illuminae, though, I finally decided to grab a copy and see what it was all about.

The day Kady and Ezra break up, their world falls apart. Literally. Their tiny planet becomes victim to a deadly attack and Kady and Ezra find themselves helping each other just to survive. They find their way to an evacuating fleet, taking them to space ships that will bring them to safety. Little do they know, the attack on their planet was much more deadly than anyone could have dreamed and they find themselves trying to survive a different kind of attack before it's too late for anyone.

When I started this book, I was reminded why I don't read sci-fi: The immense amount of information. I find complex books hard to keep straight and I was a bit lost in the technical information given to us at the beginning of this book. But when we got into the story, I settled into the flow of the story and started to really understand the characters and fall in love with them. Even though this book is only written in files, emails, messages, maps, and other forms, I felt like I got a really good sense of the characters, a sense of urgency, and a sense of suspense. There were so many dimensions to this story and it was so engaging. Even though this was 599 pages, I flew through it.

But let's get to the real reason I loved this book. The romance! This centers around Kady and Ezra and how they broke up on the day of the attacks. Being the victim of an attack really makes you rethink your life and Kady and Ezra realize that they really do miss each other. Too bad they end up on completely separate ships. I loved how we still got their whit and humor through their messages, as well as their desperation to be with each other. Their characters were so headstrong and so determined to make sure the other was safe and alive.

While this book was definitely out of my comfort zone, I loved every second of it. I loved the action and was surprised by how much death was involved in this book. I felt like I was watching my favorite sci-fi movies (I, Robot or Guardians of the Galaxy anyone?) and I had no idea how the characters were going to get out of their situation. There were so many twists and turns and I had no idea how this book was going to end. I cannot wait to pick up Gemina and see what happens to these characters and the crazy web they wove themselves!

Book Review: Killing Sarai by JA Redmerski

Killing Sarai (In the Company of Killers #1)
By JA Redmerski
Release Date: January 19, 2014
Source: Amazon
Sarai was only fourteen when her mother uprooted her to live in Mexico with a notorious drug lord. Over time she forgot what it was like to live a normal life, but she never let go of her hope to escape the compound where she has been held for the past nine years.

Victor is a cold-blooded assassin who, like Sarai, has known only death and violence since he was a young boy. When Victor arrives at the compound to collect details and payment for a hit, Sarai sees him as her only opportunity for escape. But things don’t go as planned and instead of finding transport back to Tucson, she finds herself free from one dangerous man and caught in the clutches of another.

While on the run, Victor strays from his primal nature as he succumbs to his conscience and resolves to help Sarai. As they grow closer, he finds himself willing to risk everything to keep her alive; even his relationship with his devoted brother and liaison, Niklas, who now like everyone else wants Sarai dead.

As Victor and Sarai slowly build a trust, the differences between them seem to lessen, and an unlikely attraction intensifies. But Victor’s brutal skills and experience may not be enough in the end to save her, as the power she unknowingly holds over him may ultimately be what gets her killed.

This is their story…

I have heard so much hype surrounding this book and so many people have recommended it to me. It was described as a Mr. and Mrs. Smith action romance and, seeing as I love that movie, I finally bought the ebook from Amazon and dug in.

Sarai has been living in Mexico as the prisoner of a drug lord since she was thirteen. Having forgotten what it was like to be normal, being a prisoner is all Sarai knows. When an American stops by to do business, Sarai finally sees her chance of escape and sneaks into his car in hopes of being saved. Little does she know, Victor is neither American nor a savior. Victor is an assassin hired by her owner to kill an enemy. There's something about Sarai, though, that makes Victor hesitate to continue on in his cold, emotionless life and actually try to save the girl who knows death almost as much as he does.

I've got to say, this book starts out slow. Sooooooo slow. And the action is not the action I know and love in my action romances. The action in this book was so anticlimactic and our characters always get out of the bad situations way too easily. There just wasn't enough suspense when the bad guys would catch up with Sarai and Victor and they were able to take them down in an instant.

Going onto the romance, this was NOTHING like Mr. and Mrs. Smith. I did not get any chemistry between Sarai and Victor in the beginning of the book so, when they finally got together, I wasn't feeling it at all. I thought they were kind of weird together and didn't buy that either of them really had those feelings for one another. I get that Victor started to question his assassin upbringing and started to have a conscious when it came to another human being, but I didn't believe his romantic feelings for Sarai.

Sadly, this did not live up to the hype for me. I think it's because I've read so many good romantic suspense novels that this one just didn't live up to them. I've heard the story gets better as the series continues, so I may have to pick those up and see if the chemistry actually clicks with these two characters.

Book Review: Dare to Stay by Jen McLaughlin

Dare to Stay (The Sons of Steel Row #2)
by Jen McLaughlin
Release Date: August 2, 2016
Source: Publisher
Bruised and bloodied on Boston's mean streets, Chris O'Brien is reeling from the loss of his childhood best friend. But after barely escaping a hit placed on his head, Chris is desperate to live. A safe haven comes to mind - the home of the perfect girl from his childhood, Molly Lachlan. Before he has fully considered what it would mean to involve her in his mess, he finds himself on her doorstep.

When Molly agrees to let Chris inside her home, she realizes she's also letting him into her life. Danger and desperation are coming off him like steam, and yet she can't bring herself to turn him away. His bad boy charm always had a hold on her, but now there's a soulfulness and sorrow in him that she's never seen before. And despite the heart-stopping risk of helping him, she hopes against all reason that he'll stay...

The stakes are dangerously high...and the passion is seriously intense. Follow the exploits of the Sons of Steel Row in Dare To Run and Dare To Stay.

After reading and loving Dare to Run, I was a bit skeptical that this book centered around Chris. After what he did in book one, I was interested to see how Jen McLaughlin was going to make him into a likable hero.

After making a huge mistake, Chris isn't sure how he's going to continue with his life in his gang, the Sons of Steel Row. Beaten and bleeding on the street, Molly finds Chris and is determined to keep him safe, no matter how hard Chris tries to fight her. Molly knows that Chris is dangerous and that she should be scared of him, but the more time she spends with Chris as he is nursed back to health, the deeper she finds herself falling.

Oh my goodness, from page one of this book, I was hooked. It was clear that Chris was going through some serious emotional turmoil over what he had done in book one, so it was easy to forgive him right away for what he did. I loved how he had watched Molly for years and had a soft spot for her, no matter how hard his life was getting. While they kind of new each other from being acquaintances over the years, I liked how they got closer when Molly was taking care of Chris and how Chris had to finally let Molly in.

Since this is the second book in the series, we get to follow these guys try to start an honest life and leave behind the dangerous life where they are shot at around every corner. Like the last book, there is danger and suspense and you are kept on the edge of your seat and pray that the characters stay safe. The romance in this one was awesome and I absolutely loved Molly and Chris's relationship. Molly became fiercely protective of Chris and I enjoyed how headstrong her character became.

What more can I say? With action, suspense, and a whole lot of romance, I am addicted to The Sons of Steel Row series. I am so excited for Scotty's story and I can't wait to seen him fall in love and try to become a better man. If you love dangerous men who want to be good for the women they love, you have to pick up this series!

Release Day Blitz: Anything You Can Do by RS Grey

Title: Anything You Can Do
Author: R.S. Grey
Release Date: Feb 2, 2017
Add to TBR

Lucas Thatcher has always been my enemy.

It’s been a decade since I’ve seen him, but our years on opposite coasts were less of a lasting peace and more of a temporary cease-fire. Now that we’re both back in our small town, I know Lucas expects the same old war, but I’ve changed since high school—and from the looks of it, so has he.

The arrogant boy who was my teenage rival is now a chiseled doctor armed with intimidating good looks. He is Lucas Thatcher 2.0, the new and improved version I’ll be competing with in the workplace instead of the schoolyard.

I’m not worried; I’m a doctor now too, board-certified and sexy in a white coat. It almost feels like winning will be too easy—until Lucas unveils a tactic neither of us has ever used before: sexual warfare.

The day he pushes me up against the wall and presses his lips to mine, I can’t help but wonder if he’s filling me with passion or poison. Every fleeting touch is perfect torture. With every stolen kiss, my walls crumble a little more. After all this time, Lucas knows exactly how to strip me of my defenses, but I’m in no hurry to surrender.

Knowing thy enemy has never felt so good.

I am a lover of books, chocolate, reality TV, black labs, and cold weather. Seriously, if I had it my way I would be curled up on the couch with all of those things… everyday.

I live in Texas where I spend my free time writing and reading. My favorite authors are Mindy Kaling & Jonathan Safran Foer. I’m a comedy geek and love all things “funny”. Women like Tina Fey, Amy Poehler, and Mindy Kaling are definitely the biggest inspirations for my writing, though I think my work tends to skew a bit smuttier than theirs.

With every stolen kiss, my walls crumble a little more. After all this time, Lucas knows exactly how to strip me of my defenses, but I’m in no hurry to surrender.

Knowing thy enemy has never felt so good.

I have to start off this review by saying that RS Grey is one of my absolute favorite authors. I love Scoring Wilder and The Allure series and I always look forward to a new book by her. As an enemies to lovers romantic comedy, I couldn't wait to dig into this one. Sadly, I just couldn't connect with or enjoy the main character.

Since they day they were born, Daisy and Lucas have been enemies. All throughout school they've competed to be the best and now, both 28 and back in their home town, they're back at each other's throats. Daisy assumes she's back to train under their town's doctor to take over his practice, but little does she know, Lucas has been hired to work right beside her. Determined to prove she is better than him and secure her future career, Daisy will do anything to win over the doctor and push Lucas out. Now that they're older, though, Daisy is starting to notice Lucas in ways she had never noticed before. Daisy knows she doesn't need the distraction that's becoming harder to resist…

Like I said, this book sounded so promising, but from the very beginning I just couldn't click with Daisy's character. She is a 28-year-old doctor and still acts like a kid trying to win class president. Her need to beat Lucas was a bit juvenile and I just didn't really care for her. I think there needed to be some more substance to her past with Lucas and more time spent developing their characters. I liked her friendship with Madeleine, but I felt like we didn't really get a whole lot of that or if she had any friends while in college or med school. We didn't get a lot of Daisy's dating history either and only a gloss over of Lucas's. I just wanted more depth to who they were and then maybe I would have understood and liked Daisy's character more.

While there were funny moments and I did enjoy when Lucas and Daisy bickered, the ending came up too fast and way too easily. I like it when characters really have to work at winning each other over and I felt like there was all this build up between our characters and the climax was over in a snap. In the end, I think it was the timing and pacing of the book that wasn't as complete and substantial as I wanted it to be.

Overall, this wasn't my favorite from RS Grey. While the idea and outline was nice, I wanted a more likable main character and a more believable timeline. I know, though, that lots of other reviewers on Goodreads have loved this, so maybe it just wasn't my cup of tea.
