Waiting on Wednesday (32)

This is a meme hosted by Breaking the Spine where every Wednesday bloggers highlight a book that they are eagerly anticipating the release of!

The Sweetest Spell
By Suzanne Selfors
Release Date: August 21, 2012
Summary: A lyrical and romantic reimaging of The Ugly Duckling for teens.

Emmeline Thistle has always had a mysterious bond with cows, beginning on the night of her birth, when the local bovines saved the infant cast aside to die in the forest. But Emmeline was unaware that this bond has also given her a magical ability to transform milk into chocolate, a very valuable gift in a kingdom where chocolate is more rare and more precious than gold or jewels. Then one day Owen Oak, a dairyman’s son, teaches Emmeline to churn milk into butter – and instead she creates a delicious chocolate confection that immediately makes her a target for every greedy, power-hungry person in the kingdom of Anglund. Only Owen loves Emmeline for who she truly is, not her magical skill. But is his love enough to save her from the danger all around her?

This book sounds so interesting! I love modern retellings of fairy tales and I don't think I've read an Ugly Duckling one yet. It sounds so magical and romantic, with Emmeline having a special power to turn milk into chocolate (um, yum!). Then Owen sounds super sweet by how he liked her before she got her powers. I have a feeling it's going to be a super cute read that I will love!

Book Review: Until Next Time by Amy Lignor

Until Next Time
By Amy Lignor
Release Date: February 1, 2012
Summary: How does a girl choose between the one who steals her heart and the one who owns her soul?

Matt and Emily were created for a specific job. Raised and trained as the ultimate angel/warrior team, they are sent down to save, defend, judge and forgive, depending on the 'life' they've been assigned. What they don't realize is that the power of human emotions, such as love, anger, passion and fear can take over even the best of souls, causing them to make mistakes and follow paths that lead to confusion and heartache.

When the reason for their training is finally revealed, the angel/warrior team find themselves thrust into a world they know nothing about. Matt takes over the life of Daniel, a young man with a great deal of baggage. Emily becomes Liz, a girl living in a remote village who relies on nothing more than her own strength to survive. A violent storm erupts one night, and framed in the window of Liz's establishment is a frightening face. Let in by the soul of a Good Samaritan, the two visitors bring with them a past full of secrets that could literally change an angel's path and a warrior's plans.

From murder to redemption, this angel/warrior team must find a way to keep the faith they have in each other in a world that's ripping them apart.

Review: Angels aren't really the first fantasy creature I read about, but I've got to say they aren't that bad! Until Next Time doesn't deal with angels on earth, but rather is about the souls of angels using human shells to learn more about the human race and emotions. I loved how the book started with the future and Emily looking back at her time on earth, then starting the story in the present time. It was really intriguing and made me want to read more to see why emotions were so high about her falling in love with someone she wasn't supposed to.

The idea of this story was very unique, but I think it should have been explained a little bit more because it's still confusing how it all worked. Emily is her soul in heaven, but then can enter Liz's body without remembering her life as a soul. I didn't understand the big deal when Emily would transfer between worlds and what was going on in her soul world. I really enjoyed the part when she was on earth, but the should world was just a bit confusing.

The characters of the book were great and it was interesting to see how they met and lived after that. Charles and Faith were adorable and Jason was such a great guy! I didn't really like Daniel, but Matt made up for his weird behavior. The idea that Emily is a guardian angel is super cute and it was a great twist to put her soul into a human body and see how she reacts to the world. Until Next Time is a very original story about angels that surprises you every step of the way.

Book Review: The Duke Is Mine by Eloisa James

The Duke Is Mine
By Eloisa James
Release Date: December 27, 2011
Summary: Destiny will be decided between the sheets in this all-new tale of "The Princess and the Pea."
For Olivia Lytton, betrothal to the Duke of Canterwick--hardly a Prince Charming--feels more like a curse than a happily-ever-after. At least his noble status will help her sister, Georgiana, secure an engagement with the brooding, handsome Tarquin, Duke of Sconce, a perfect match for her in every way . . . every way but one. Tarquin has fallen in love with Olivia.
Quin never puts passion before reason. And reason says that Georgiana is his ideal bride. But the sensual, fiery, strong-willed Olivia ignites an unknown longing in him-- a desire they are both powerless to resist. When a scandalous affair begins, they risk losing everything--Olivia's engagement, her sister's friendship, and their own fragile love. Only one thing can save them--and it awaits in the bedroom, where a magnificent mattress holds life-changing answers to the greatest romantic riddle of all.
Review: I saw this book online a couple of months before it was released and couldn't get it out of my head! I love the cover so much and when I figured out it was a retelling of the Princess and the Pea, I knew I had to read it. And it was awesome! Olivia has been betrothed to Rupert, a duke, ever since she was born, but when she meets Quin, a duke whose mother is trying to find him the perfect wife, none of her plans matter anymore. The problem is Quin's mother has other women for Quin to marry, women who have passed her duchess-worthy tests.

Doesn't it sound like a great story? Well it was! The first 50 or 60 pages were really hard to get into, but once I got past them, I flew through the rest of the story. I loved Olivia's character and how she was so hardheaded. She full figured and wasn't afraid to talk back to authority. What I loved most about her, though, was how loyal she was to Rupert and her twin sister Georgiana. No matter how much she wanted something, she would always think of others first, which made her impossible not to like.

All of the other characters were perfect too! Justin was quirky, Georgiana was sweet, Rupert was so innocent, and Quin was just perfect. I loved Quin and Olivia's first encounter and how they were attracted to each other from that moment. Watching them grow closer despite all of the trials they had to go through made this book so good! i wish the beginning wasn't so slow, but other than that this was a fabulous retelling of a classic fairytale. If you're a historical romance fan and want a new, great book to read, make sure you check out The Duke Is Mine!

In My Mailbox (26)

In My Mailbox is a meme that I picked up from The Story Siren's blog. It's where we share the new books that we've gotten for that week with our readers. These books could be from the library, the store, or from the writers/publishers for review. Whatever the reason, I will share my new books every Sunday!

I'm not sure where these are from, but they were in my mailbox this week and they both look really good! I've been so busy with midterms this past week that I've barely had time to read, so I won't be able to get to these books in a while. Hopefully I can read a lot more this week (it's spring break! Yay!) so that I can get caught up on everything I have to review. So it was a pretty light week for me! What did you all get in your mailbox? Make sure you leave a link so I can check it out!
