Book Review: The Things About Love by Julie James

The Thing About Love
By Julie James
Release Date: April 18, 2017

Two undercover FBI agents can hide who they are from everyone but each other in the latest novel from the New York Times bestselling author of Suddenly One Summer.

FBI agents Jessica Harlow and John Shepherd have a past. The former lawyer and cocky Army ranger clashed during their training at Quantico, gladly going their separate ways after graduating from the Academy. Six years later, the last thing either of them expects is to run into each other again–assigned to work as partners in a high-profile undercover sting.

For both of them, being paired with a former rival couldn’t come at a worse time. Recently divorced from a Hollywood producer and looking for a fresh start, Jessica is eager to prove herself at her new field office. And John is just one case away from his dream assignment to the FBI’s elite Hostage Rescue Team. In order to nail a corrupt Florida politician, they’ll have to find a way to work as a team–a task that becomes even trickier when they’re forced to hole up at a romantic, beachfront resort as part of the investigation. Suddenly, the heat behind their nonstop sparring threatens to make the job a whole lot more complicated. . .

I absolutely love action romances, especially ones involving two people who work for some sort of agency like the FBI or the CIA. Seeing as this one was also going to be an enemies to lovers romance, I couldn't wait to dive in!

From the moment FBI agents Jessica Harlowe and John Shepard met at Quantico, they've been competitors. Always trying to one up each other, John got on Jessica's nerves and John felt he needed to prove he could be better despite his state school Bachelor's degree. Six years later, the two are surprised when Jessica moves back to Chicago and they're paired together on an undercover assignment. Determined to be amicable, the two know they must get along in order to nail the Florida politician taking bribes. As they spend more and more time together and end up in a romantic hotel, it's easy to forget the fine line between love and hate…

From the beginning, this book was so adorable. I loved how, even six years laters, Jessica and John remembered how much they competed against each other at Quantico. What was interesting, though, was how each of them remember their time there completely differently. It was fun getting both of their perspectives of their time at Quantico sprinkled throughout their present assignment. We got to personally see how they grew to hate each other and how that shaped their feelings for one other now.

While these two were FBI agents, their missions was quite…tame. I wanted so much more action but this one had to do with nailing a corrupt politician, so there wasn't exactly a need for intense action. I still enjoyed how Jessica and John worked undercover together and how they realized their misconceptions of each other as they got to know each other more.

To me, this read more like a contemporary romance, which I still really enjoyed. John was reevaluating what he wanted out of his life and Jessica was fresh off of a divorce, which was definitely a huge life change. It was so fun watching them fall for each other and share the same insecurities over being agents in a relationship. Their jobs take so much of them and it's hard to share a life with someone when you have such a demanding occupation.

Overall, this one was a cute FBI love story. I loved Jessica and John's relationship and their enemies to lovers journey. They were two people who really didn't want to fall for each other but ended up underestimating the power of a good undercover op

Review Blitz: The Hot Shot by Kristen Callihan

the hot shot AN

TheHotShot Amazon-2

First we were friends. Then we were roommates. Now I want more…

What can I say about Chess Copper? The woman is capable of bringing me to my knees. I know this about five minutes after getting naked for her.

No one is more surprised than me. The prickly photographer my team hired to shoot our annual charity calendar isn’t my usual type. She’s defense to my offense, a challenge at every turn. But when I’m with her, all the regrets and darkness goes away. She makes life fun.

I want to know Chess, be close to her. Which is a bad idea.

Chess is looking for a relationship. I’ve never given a woman more than one night. But when fate leaves Chess without a home, I step up and offer her mine. We’re roommates now. Friends without benefits. But it’s getting harder to keep our hands off each other. And the longer we live together the more I realize she’s becoming my everything.

Trick is… Now that I’ve made her believe I’m a bad bet, how do I convince her to give this player a true shot at forever?

DID YOU SEE THIS COVER!?! Seriously, I had to stop myself from drooling and when the book actually had the main character actually do a plank without clothes (don't worry, it was for a nude photo shoot for his job), I was one happy reader. I couldn't wait to meet Finn after seeing him on the cover and boy did I end up loving him!

Chess Copper has always kept her heart open to a relationship, but she's never found the right guy. When pretty boy quarterback Finn Mannus shows up on her doorstep with his teammates for a nude photo shoot, the two can't deny the strange feelings they have around each other, but they can't help but bicker. No matter how much they argue, though, Chess and Finn find themselves starting to become friends. Finn quickly can't picture his life without Chess, but he's been burned in the past and doesn't know if he can trust another woman while Chess doesn't know if Finn can settle down and truly give himself to someone else.

From the start, I had a smile on my face while reading this book. I mean, our couple meets at a nude photo shoot. Chess, from the start, is a girl who can definitely hold her own with the boys and it was so fun watching her butt heads with Finn. They bickered like an old married couple and I loved how they developed a friendship after being intrigued by each other when they first met. It was so funny how thrown off Chess was by her attraction for Finn because they are both totally not each other's types. Their hesitance towards accepting their feelings for each other led them to being friends first, which made them actually getting together that much more satisfying.

Since these two do become friends and spend time together and get to know each other, this one was more of a slow burn romance and it drove me CRAZY. But crazy in a good way! There were realistic obstacles in their relationship and I liked how Finn was so dedicated to his job as a professional football player and really didn't know how Chess would deal with that after past relationships have failed because of it. Chess was also trying to figure out how to balance a man and a career and it was refreshing for our main characters to try to decide how to balance what was good for themselves and what their hearts wanted.

Overall, I absolutely loved this book. While I haven't read the other three in this series (this can be read as a standalone), I am not going to hesitate to pick up the rest. These characters are lovable, their banter is hilarious, and their romance is swoon-worthy. I couldn't have asked for more!

CHESS

Grumbling, I toss on some black lounge pants and my oversized Tulane t-shirt and head to the drugstore.
My head throbs by the time I get there, and my insides are writhing. I rest my hand against my lower stomach and grab a basket before calling James to complain.
“I swear,” I tell him as I grab a bottle of painkillers. “It’s like this entire day has been cursed.”
He snickers. “Curse. Get it? Curse?”
I roll my eyes, even though he can’t see me. “Laugh it up. Meanwhile, it feels as if someone is playing Battleship in my uterus.”
“Poor Chessie bear. At least we know why you were in such a foul mood.”
A flush washes over my cheeks. “Yeah.” Lie. Lie. Lie. A tub of salted caramel gelato makes its way into the basket.
“Tell me you’re getting some gelato,” James says.
I smile. “Just grabbed it.”
“Salted caramel?”
“You know it.”
I find the feminine products aisle and search for my brand. “I’m going to go home, take a long bath with my gelato, and forget this fucking day.” Forget Finn. “And then I’m going to go on Amazon and buying a freaking year’s supply of tampons so I don’t have to make these kinds of emergency runs anymore.”
A low, deep chuckle rumbles from behind me, and all the tiny hairs lift on my arms.
“But you’ll still need your gelato,” a familiar—fuck me, seriously?—voice points out.
My insides swoop even as my cheeks burn.
“Who is that?” James asks in my ear.
I slowly turn on one heel. “The plague,” I say, glaring up at Finn Mannus’s smiling face.
“From asshat to plague.” Finn scrunches up his brow. “I’m not sure if that’s a step down or a tie.”
“Who is that?” James nearly yells now.
I don’t take my eyes off Finn. “I’ll call you back.”
James’s squawks of protest cut off as I hit the end button.
“Are you stalking me, Mannus?”
Finn a rests his hands low on his lean hips. “Having a healthy amount of conceit myself, I have to admire yours, but no, buttercup. My buddy Woodson lives a few blocks away. It’s poker night. I’m stocking up on beer.”
It’s only then I notice a twelve pack tucked under his other arm.
“And tampons?” I ask, with a pointed look around the aisle we’re standing in.
“Not tonight,” he says easily. “Though we used to keep a pack of them back in college. Light flows were perfect for stopping up bloody noses.”
A snort escapes me. “Now there’s a visual.” Somehow, I’ve taken a step closer to him. He’s freshly showered, the golden brown strands of his hair still damp at his temples. And I wonder if he’s just come from the gym or practice. “So back in college you went and bought these tampons?”
“Nah,” he says with a cheeky smile. “I’d ask one of the girls hanging around to get me some.”
“Of course you did.” My nose wrinkles with annoyance.
“Give me a little credit, Chess. I’d buy them now if I had to.”
“Hmm…” I eye him, trying not to return his smile. If only because it’s more fun when he teases. “So why are you in this aisle now, if not for potential nosebleed needs?”
“That’s easy.” He steps closer, a warm wall of muscle and clean scent. “I heard your voice.”
For a second I just blink. “You recognized my voice?”
His gaze darts over my face as if he’s trying to get a read on why I’m gaping at him. “Not to be…ah…rude, but you’re loud when you talk on the phone.”
“Yeah, but… You recognized it.” We’d only just met. It occurs to me that I’d recognized his both times he’d snuck up on me. Then again, his voice is distinctive, flowing like hot honey when he’s relaxed or hammering down like iron to rock when he’s taking command of a situation.
A soft flush of pink tints the tips of his ears. If I wasn’t staring at him, I might have missed it. He shifts his weight. “Was I not supposed to?”
“No. Yes.” I shake my head and laugh. “I don’t know.”
He grins then. “You’re cute when you’re flustered.”
“I’m not flustered.” I am.

From the bestselling author of Weightless and A Love Letter to Whiskey

Wren Ballard is trying to find herself.

She never expected to be divorced at twenty-seven, but now that the court date has passed, it’s official. The paperwork is final. Her feelings on it aren’t.

Spending the summer in a small mountain town outside Seattle is exactly what she needs. The peaceful scenery is a given, the cat with the croaky meow is a surprise, but the real kicker? A broody neighbor with nice arms, a strange reputation, and absolutely no interest in her.

Anderson Black is perfectly fine being lost.

He doesn’t care about the town’s new resident — he’s too busy fighting his own demons. But when he’s brought face to face with Wren, he can see her still-fresh wounds from a mile away. What he doesn’t see coming is his need to know who put them there — or his desperation to mend them.

Sometimes getting lost is the way to find yourself. Sometimes healing only adds a new scar. And sometimes the last place you expected to be is exactly where you find home.

I had just grabbed my oversized hat and slipped my sunglasses on when I spotted Anderson walking up the drive with a large trash bag slung over his shoulder. He wore a simple, black V-neck and distressed jeans, an outfit way too dark and hot for the heat. A light sheen of sweat gathered on his neck as he made his way toward my cabin, his eyes hidden behind all-black sunglasses.

"Change your mind?" I asked, not even fighting the grin on my face as I walked outside and leaned against the banister.

Anderson squinted up at me, his boots heavy as they hit each stair. "About?"

"Tubing?" I asked. That was why he was here, right?

"Oh." He shook his head as he hit the top stair, shrugging the bag off his shoulders to hold it by the neck in one fist. "No, I have somewhere to be..." His voice trailed off, and even through the tinted shades of his glasses I felt his eyes on my chest. I'd strapped on my favorite boho print bathing suit and paired it with a dainty gold chain that wrapped around my neck once before dipping between my chest and crossing over my ribs.

He sniffed, holding the bag out toward me. "I just came to drop these off. My clothes. Well, the ones that could probably use a little TLC."

My eyes lit up and I reached for the bag, but Anderson snatched it back, brows shooting up into his forehead.

"No frills, Wren."

I threw my hands up in surrender. "I promise."

He smirked, just slightly, and handed the bag over, tucking his hands in his front pockets.

"Are you sure you don't want to come?" I asked, peering into the bag at my project before setting it just inside the cabin and locking the door behind me.

"I can't," he said, lips pressed together. He was tense, the muscles on his forearms tight as he glanced around at pretty much everything but me.

I opened my mouth to ask why but was cut off by the sound of a truck flying into my drive, tires sliding against the gravel.

Tucker was in the driver's seat with Davie in the passenger. Sarah and Yvette sat in the back, laughing with their hands up as the truck skidded to a stop. They were both sprawled out on a pile of tubes, wearing bathing suit tops and tiny shorts.

All of their faces froze when they saw Anderson.

"Hey, you ready, Wren?" Tucker asked warily, his eyes moving from where Anderson stood in front of me, to me, and back again.

"Yeah, one sec!" I called back.

I turned to Anderson, but his eyes were hard on Tucker, jaw ticking under his skin. When he faced me once more, an anchor fell from my throat into the pit of my stomach, immobilizing me completely. Because even though I 'd tried to convince myself I was wrong, I recognized the look in his eyes.

Possession.

And when his nose flared and he took one big step toward me, our chests brushing, his hand reaching out to rest almost imperceptibly on my hip, the anchor in my stomach exploded into flames, burning a desire so fierce I inhaled a toxic breath and didn't let it go.

"Be careful, okay?" His eyes locked on mine just before he leaned in and swiftly kissed my cheek.

He turned on his heel and jogged down the stairs and past the truck. Sarah called his name, but he didn't acknowledge her, just kept his gaze forward until he'd disappeared from view.

And then everyone looked at me.

#readadessen: That Summer by Sarah Dessen

Can you guys believe how many books Sarah Dessen has written? When I saw that blogs were coming together to celebrate Sarah's newest release by reading her previously released books, I knew that I had to participate! I have been reading Sarah Dessen books since I first started getting into YA contemporaries, way back in 8th grade. While I've fallen behind on her newest releases, I devoured her books in high school and couldn't wait to revisit some favorites! One of the books I get to cover in the #readadessen celebration is That Summer!

That Summer
By Sarah Dessen
Release Date: January 1, 1996
The more things change...

As far as Haven is concerned, there's just too much going on.

Everything is changing, and she's not sure where she fits in.

Then her sister's old boyfriend shows up, sparking memories of the summer when they were all happy and everything was perfect...

But along the way, Haven realizes that sometimes change is a good thing.

I've wanted to reread some books I have read in high school and middle school but I'm scared because I don't know how much I'll like them. Will characters seem juvenile? Will amazing storyline seem flat now? I remember how I enjoyed this one when I first read it way back when (how was this published in 1996?!) and I was excited to dive into it again.

Haven's life has completely turned on its head. Her father is getting remarried, her sister is getting married, and her mom is trying to embrace the single life. Haven is just left to the side to deal with everything going on. That summer, though, her sister's old boyfriend shows up and reminds her of another summer where everything was easy and happy. Can she get that back or embrace the change that she's been facing now?

I've got to say, I definitely read this differently than I did when I first read it almost ten years ago. First off, our main character is very passive. I have grown to really not like passive characters (especially after reading Mansfield Park by Jane Austen) and Haven does pretty much nothing in this book. She's an observer, which I actually am as well, but for a novel, I expect more than a character's observations about everything going on around her.

While I wasn't a fan of the lack of action/plot in this book, I still think that it dealt with family in a way a lot of contemporaries don't. Haven's parents had divorced and she had to deal with how to approach the subject of her father around her mother and her sister without offending either one. Haven is five years younger than her sister and her sister is a huge part of this story, so I enjoyed seeing their relationship and how Haven felt kind of left there as an outsider. I think this outsider feeling, though, was a little too much of the story. And the fact that Haven was super tall (almost 6 foot) was drilled into us over and over and I didn't care by the end of the book.

Overall, this one isn't my favorite from Dessen, but it's still a good look at family and feeling like your life is completely out of your control. I can definitely tell this is one of Dessen's earlier works, but it's still a sweet contemporary about love, life, and family.

Sometimes getting lost is the way to find yourself. Sometimes healing only adds a new scar. And sometimes the last place you expected to be is exactly where you find home.

After reading A Love Letter to Whiskey earlier this year, I have wanted to pick up everything Kandi Steiner has ever written. That book had so much heartbreak and emotion, so I knew I had to be prepared when picking up her newest release.

Wren Ballard thought she had found her forever when she married her husband, Keith. Ten years later, though, Wren has found herself divorced and trying to find out who she really is. In order to find inspiration for her newest fashion line and rediscover herself, Wren has decided to stay in a mountainside cabin an hour outside of Seattle. Her first night there, she runs into the silent, brooding Anderson Black who instantly intrigues Wren. Anderson has some demons of his own and has spent the past 7 years hiding from them. Wren is not something Anderson had planned on happening, but the more time the two spend together, the more willing they are to face their demons and see if they really can heal and live a life they each deserve.

When I started this book, I quickly realized this was going to be different from ALLTW. Not only were the characters older, but the romance was much sweeter and…mature? Wren is coming off of a 10 year marriage and is just trying to discover who she really is. It was so refreshing how Wren's marriage wasn't something she really wanted to end but had to because of how far she and her husband had grown apart. Her whole story was realistic and I liked how she had tried so far to fit into her husband's mold of a perfect wife that she lost who she was along the way. The cabin is such a serene place and the perfect location for her to do some soul searching. After reading this book, I want to find a cabin for myself (with a super adorable cat) to whole up in for the entire summer.

Have I mentioned the emotions in this book? Because while it had more mature, adult characters, there was still so much emotion. Anderson was coping with something that he felt was his fault so many years ago and he hadn't really been living since then. While he found himself opening up to Wren and vice versa, they still didn't know how to truly be strong, independent people on their own. The whole cast of characters in this book were so lovable and I loved how they were shocked watching Anderson return to being alive again after Wren came into town. There were definitely a few setbacks along the way with Wren and Anderson's relationship because it was so fragile and they were both still trying to put their own hearts back together before they could fully give them to each other.

In the end, this was another emotional, heart wrenching hit from Kandi Steiner. I was so emotionally invested in Wren and Anderson, both as individuals and as a couple, and my heart broke for them as they were trying to overcome such tortured pasts. Oh, and I can't write this review without mentioning how fun Wren's character was and her love for 90s music. I wanted to put on some Backstreet Boys, fire up some pancakes, and dance around lip-syncing. You won't be able to help falling in love with Wren's bright personality and Anderson's brooding, mountain-man attitude. In other words, you have to pick this book up!

Aphrodite knows love — just don’t ask her to figure out her own mess.

Lex is everything Dean needs, but he can’t have her.

It doesn’t matter that her eyes speak to a long forgotten part of him, or that her art and poetry touch his shredded heart. She’s off limits — crossing that line would implode his band and everything he’s ever cared about. There’s only one option: stay away from her, no matter the cost. Even if the price is his heart.

Dean is everything Lex wants, but she can’t take the risk.

The second she meets him, she knows her heart is in danger. She’s convinced it’s only attraction that has her hung up on the dark, quiet lead singer, but with every day that passes, she knows it’s more. It’s just that she can’t put her heart on the line.
